Big Bear is my favorite lake.
Were you fishing from shore or a boat?
I’ve always done well just drifting away from the dam, letting the wind push me along. I generally try to stay within 75 yards of the shoreline on the north side of the lake. When I get near windy point, I start over and motor back towards the dam.
I use floating cheese suspended by a bobber with a small split shot to sink the bait about 10 ft.
I’m 74 with mobility issues so shore fishing is not my thing anymore.
I used to shore fish near the dam on the north side of the lake and caught fish.
Now, I enjoy the beauty of the lake, especially near the dam and have learned to relax while drifting along, even better if the Dodgers are on the radio.
Good luck on your future fishing trips.

I’ve always had pretty good luck from shore fishing near Gray’s Landing using earthworms….the power mouse I used consisted of cheese power bait and the tail of a real worm…best of luck to you..

We were just floating the boat in the current. Yep, tried worms n everything from spinners to power bait. Got a few nibbles and finally caught it. Never had much luck from the shore here. But it’s always a good day by the lake

Big Bear is a thought Lake to learn bur when you do , you will catch some big Trout. The wind has alot to do with that lake as to which way it is blow on the lake.
Trolling is the best method on the lake using needle fish with led core line.
Good luck
The wind does make a big difference. We always caught almost all of our trout in the spring trolling from west to east from Boulder Bay toward Metcalf Bay. In the fall we trolled from Gray’s Landing on the north shore down to the house on the shore near the dam. Our favorite lure was the bikini needlefish. The prevailing common wind blows starting mid-morning and increases as the day goes on from west to east. I think the trout face into this prevailing wind. We caught most our fish in Oct.,Nov., and April after ice-out. Unfortunately the drought has seriously lowered the water level and the public was given a warning about blue-green algae being found in this lake and Lake Elsinore by biologists.

You know the lake !!
I also when the lake was full I would troll from Fawnskin to the dam and back making a circle around the bouy markers.
There is a ridge that runs from the Dam to Fawnskin in the center .
Caught alot of Trout trolling that way in that area. Nice size and also using a Frog color Flatfish lure.
Have a great week and a safe Holiday.

Yes. We were in our fishing boat just drifting. Lol we tried bobbers, spinners, worms, power bait, eggs… we started at the dam area as well. Got a few bites, and landed one on power bait.
