I’m going fishing with some friends somewhere on the columbia on the 1st and i have some questions about sturgeon.
What do they go for, bait-wise? What are their habits and habitats this time of year? Anything else i need to know and does anyone have any recommendations as for locations in Washington to find Sturgeon?
They are bottom feeders for the most part they have a suction tube to suck up food so don't hit them till they are really after the bait a piece of roe mop hearing with a sammon heart rubber banded to it filled with fish formula spray the whole thing down with fish formula or wd-40. They make catfish and sammon and other fish look like beginners with their sense of smell the least human scent and they will not hit it. Use gloves when prepping bait and hooks. Barbless hooks are required in most states. Get a guide for your first time or someone who has done it a lot . As for areas above the upper reach on the Columbia river was good to me a 4'10 and 6' and a 10'
Got a 8'2" on the Snake River out of Lewiston Clarkston area
W-D45
Loc: North Central WI
Cut bait - bluegills or suckers whatever local regs allow. Gob a night crawlers is good too.
I caught an 11 ft last Sept near Umatilla, OR. That area will open back up Sept 1. Its been closed for July and Aug for spawning. Thrill of a lifetime! I believe we used squid that was garlic scented for bait.
Listen to Seegundo. Sounds like he has it down. Good luck
If you are a beer drinker bring.sturgon are awesome to catch and eat. Pay close attention to the rules and he willing to get your ass kicked
Thank you for all the tips! I’m hoping for a fight that lasts a while!
Used to be a guide named Dale in Richland Washington I'm not sure of the last name the years aren't kind to my memory Burton??? Nick named Dr. Death killed 500 yotes for the money (bounty) to buy a boat. May not be around anymore had Gray's disease
