broke down and got a downrigger do I use mono line or still use my lead core. Looking for that experience downrigger? The downrigger is manual?
Use mono or braid line with a downrigger.

Well, I ordered a set of manual downriggers, like 50 years ago, I used them 3 times, and then put them away and never used them again. It would make any sense to use a lead core line, you have weight to get the lure down, use mono.

Thank you farmer tom for the info. Next how far back should my leader be from the mono or braid from the release clip.

You only need to be maybe 20 feet or so out from your clip. Or at least that's what I use to do anyway.

I had a manual for one season then sold it and got a scotty electic. I use braided find it better than the steel cable. where I fish lots of current so I use 14lb ball. on my real I use 65lb braid . have tried lots of different clips ended up with the scotty pinch clips. I run the flasher 20' behind the clip the the squid, lure or plug behind that

Down here in the south mostly use cannon down riggers spooled with wire line for fishing deep blue water, using a shock leader with 80 - 100 # mono on a # 6 planer, and catch the fish that are not coming up to eat. Tuna, Dolphin, wahoo and even a grouper now and then. not as much fun, but it sure puts the meat on the table

I still use metal line on the downrigger. Some fish are more boat shy than others. I use a 100 foot rule for kokanee. 10 foot down 90 feet back, 20 feet down, 80 fee back, 30 feet down 70 feet back, ect. For less sensitive fish, I usually put the flasher 20 feet back regardless of depth. I also avoid the downrigger if I can. Even with power units it is a hassle. For fishing over 40 feet deep it becomes the best approach. When trolling for lakers and king salmon, I fish about 100 feet deep. A downrigger is needed. Fishing in changing saltwater current for silvers also pretty much requires a downrigger. When using your manual unit, go with as light of a weight as you can that achieves your goal. When using a power unit, use a heavy ball as retrieving the extra weight is not an issue.
use the 100 ft rule
The depth down plus leader length should add up to 100 ft.
If you are 50 ft down, then your leader is 50 ft back
80 ft down 20 ft leader

We set back 100 feet with 50 pound braid and a 10 foot mono leader for Kokes.

Any fish in really clear water that is line shy also gets spooked by the downrigger weigjht and cable goin through the water. So it's not a bad idea to set your offering/lure back 100 feet or so from your weight. Gives them a little time to settle down by the time your lure gets to them.
