My son and I went out for 3hours yesterday and found some fish:-)
Weather was perfect clear skies and light SW breeze.
Picked up some shrimp, started up the live well and netted some white baits aka pilchards. About a 100 or so!
Fished around the schools of bait caught a lot of Sail Fin catfish. I used one of my Nomad Vibe lure and Justin used the netted bait. We both caught at least 10 or more before we said see yβall we want meat fish we like.
Picture with the two cat was a bounce header notice lure in the mouth of one of them. He actually chased it down:)
So off we went looking for Red Fish before season closes next week.
Never found them but did find some meat fish. White baits are a Mangrove Snappers candy food kept only the 14β or larger ones, I fished pilchards and Justin fished shrimp he caught some nice Pompanos and a Cero Mackerel along with a large Jack Cravel we caught probably 15 Jacks. I almost forgot about the Sea Trout to end the morning with:-)
Always a great time with my son fishing. Next weekend offshore if weather permits!
Sail cats are actually quite good. Maybe mot pompano grade but still as good as any freshwater cat, IMHO.
NorthM:
I have heard that for years and just never tried them. I like butterball catfish from our spring fed pond but those sails have not been a targeted food source. Thank you, will have to just do it and see you f they cut out taste or not we are spoiled on what we get:-)

Great day of catching JOS! That's quite a smorgasbord of fish there. Glad you guys did well. Thanks for the report and pictures.
Did you get the snapper on structure or in the mangroves?
Norman:
We caught them on the southwest side of the Pineda Causeway next to the channel entrance barriers for boats to pass thru. Both pompanos and mangroves along with a mess of small jack crevel's. Hope this helps you out if you plan on fishing the area, water was clear at the time.
Perfect .
Thank you great info.
Norman the Banana River is a bit brown and not as clear. We did try the Eau Gallie bridge but it was a bit of brown water and no bites.
Possibly the farther north to the 520 or 528 main channel near structure and clearer water should work.
Let us all know if you go and how you do!

I'm on the other side of the state I fish Charlotte harbor and the Gulf of Mexico.
I was out Thursday and the only place we could find mangrove snappers was up tight under the mangroves and shrimp on a slip bobber was the hot bait and it had to be on a incoming ride.
Nice thank you for sharing:) we use that method for trout and redfish.!
