Magnetic brakes don’t seem to be working

Beginner here, using a Lew’s Speedspool baitcasting reel. I’ve fished with it for a while now but still get incredibly frustrating backlashes and birdsnests occasionally. I’ve attributed the problem to the fact that I don’t know how to set the magnetic braking system. I’ve tried setting it from “free” to “max” but the dial only goes a few clicks and never reaches free. I’ve taken pictures and have an imgur link below. Any help would be appreciated!

They should be working. But make sure you stop the spool when the bait hits the ground. Also dont whip the rod.

Is it normal for the length of the dial to be so short?

Take the side plate off, if it has some mechanism on the spool, make sure the little white things are all pulled out. Or dm me a pic of the reel with the side plate off

So on the other side of your reel you will have a Spool Tuning knob. You need to adjust that knob so your bait BARELY falls(yes I know there are other ways that will let you cast longer but this is best for him for now until he can stop backlashing). Once you have tuned it so that it barely falls click your magnetic brake all the way to max. Try casting now, and remember you need to feather your thumb onto the spool and stop the spool completely when your lure hits the water. If you do those things you should stop backlashing.

It sounds like you are just starting with a baitcaster. I would do a coupe of things.

1 get rid of the braid. Start with 15# mono. It's thick and easy to pick out birdsnests.

2 set the brake around medium. If you are backlashing at the beginning of your cast, move it closer to max.

3 use a heavy lure. Use the casting knob and let the lure drop around 1-2 ft per second. As you get better you will adjust this knob.

4 always cast with the wind

5. Use your thumb. Practice slowing the lure down with your thumb. When the lure hits the water, stop the spool.

Sounds like you need practice. When you cast make sure you let the bait pull the line off the spool. The set up does not function like an open face. Try side arm cast and use your thumb like a clutch to slowly let the line get to full speed and again to slow it down. Use mono 10lbs min to learn also heavy bait like a 5 inch sensor worm set the break at 50 percent this should help alot .
