Hello, I have been on charters a few years ago out of Newport for Halibut and did well. I understand it is a long run out 20 -30 miles or so. Well now I have my own boat that with good conditions I can take it out there that distance. I am not looking for a specific spot, but information on how I can target some areas based on bottom readings. What am I looking for, rises with flat tops, sandy bottoms, certain depths ? I am able to go out of several ports with Florence and Winchester Bay being the closest ones, then would be Coos Bay or Newport. Any advice to help me learn the ropes would be greatly appreciated, Thanks, Mitch

Hi Mitch, when my step dad & I went out of Coos Bay/ Charleston the bait shop in Empire ,"The Bite is On" gave us some coordinates to get us started, maybe try tackle / bait shops where you launch from, sometimes they are very helpful to get you started, Good Luck to you & stay safe

Will do love that bait and tackle store, Thanks. It’s funny you would think with you tube and the internet I could find info on how to read the bottom for butts, can’t find any info anywhere. How to rig has hundreds but not how to find.

I know what you mean, there are places here on south central coast where guys are almost mooching for Halibut , I read it in Pacific Coast Sportfishing Magazine I get , we went out with a guide out of Winchester for big Canary ,Vermillion & Lingcod , he was talking to us about his Halibut trips if I remember right it was 22-27 miles out Northeast of Winchester, have a great time Mitch & be safe those waters can get bumpy,, 🤙🤙
