Hi folks. First off I am 75 years old. I have been a bank fisherman since I was a child. I want to do some boat or kayack fishing. I am a big guy, 300 lbs and 6'3". I am reasnobly spry, have pretty good balance, and fairly good mental capabilities, except memoery sometimes. Waddya all think? Waited too long?? What is the reccomended ride?? Boat or kayack. (prolly john boat) Just trolling for some opinions. Thanks....

I would think that the waters you plan to fish would dictate what you get.
I know nothing about kayaks, so I can’t tell you what to look for in a kayak.

Have you considered an inflatable pontoon boat? Fairly inexpensive, yet gets you on the water on a pretty stable platform. I'm 74, not that big (about 175 pounds, 5' 10). I've not had good balance for the past 15 or so years following a stroke, and then I totally screwed it up by a traumatic brain injury (fractured my skull) this past April. I'm not finished and neither should you be. Quite a few yakkers on here, you'll be hearing from them. I have a yak and pontoon. I much prefer the pontoon. John boat would be nice. But more expensive. What I paid for my pontoon and a trailer to haul it around, I could've bought a John. No trailer.

Borrow or rent a kayak, I got a screaming deal on a new 2 person sea kayak with a rudder, my wife and I went across a section of the lake by a dam, and the paddling destroyed our shoulders, we were all done with it, never took it out again. I had paid $2200 for a $3500 season end model, so I was able to sell it for a couple hundred over what I paid.

I then got a 13' guide pontoon boat that listed at $3500 for somewhere around $2000 on Ebay, that is a really nice easy to handle craft, I even mounted an electric trolling motor and fish finder on it.

Bilge i am 71 at 210 lbs. Yaks are rated as to what they will handle just like boats. Your 300 plus maybe 50lbs of gear may just make a decent yak be on the high end of near the limit.

Plus when being 80 comes along do you want to chance being in a craft basically not as stable as a boat?

I would say john boat with appropriate motor with a trolling motor and plan on many days of fishing.

u is right beside y on the keyboard and Lund makes fishing boats. So mu lund. Couple of mis-strokes and you end up with mu lund stead o my Lund. Jeesh and y'all were callin me dense the other day.

Consider making/having a younger buddy with a boat that would be honored to accomodate you.

Bilgebreath: Well, different strokes for different folks! I believe you would be best served with a john boat and suitable trolling motor. You will not be getting any younger, and for many men, equilibrium goes before anything else. A john boat would offer greater stability. Just Sayin...RJS

Hi Bilge, I'm 6'1' and 235 with sometimes bad knees. And I'm 58. I couldn't go out in anything less than a 14' aluminum boat and if the family joins me it's a pontoon. I never heard of an inflatable pontoon. I have to look that up.

No and I sure wish I would.
Had a buyer and the 7-10 days to get title turned to 16 days and the buyer walked.
Had a couple interested . One guy actually had his wife insist on a bigger boat cause they took their German Sheppard with them . And another couple came to their senses last minute and decide it wasn’t in budget.
Now I have 2 bass boats.
Was really hoping it was gone by now
