Soft plastics?
I have been wondering why more fly fisherman aren't using soft plastics. When you think about that alot of flies use foam, rubber legs, and the like. soft plastics are not much different. I'd think they wouldn't be hard to cast or not a whole lot different than a large streamer. They also could be presented much better through stripping line than a bait caster. I think it's because we fly fisherman like keeping fly fishing separate. I bought some plastics and hooks to use this weekend in a bass lake, and I'll admit I am a bit guilty about it for some odd reason. Honestly I don't care and will care even less once I hook one. Thoughts?

Haha i still can’t use a baitcaster to save my life. My dad is probably so disappointed. They look really fun for bass. I bet nothing feels more American than pitching jigs in bama tho, and setting the hook on a largemouth with the strength and fury that can only be dished out by a bass rod with a baitcaster

Well.. heavy pike rod is even more fun.
There are good tutorials on youtube nowdays, I got myself taught in maybe half an hour. When you start to experiment getting more distance, you’re prone to get few backlashes.

Use whatever catches fish.
A fly rod is used to cast lures that other rods are unable to. A fly rod is able to cast the light lures because the weight is in the line itself, not the lure. That's what allows it to cast. A spincast, baitcast, spinning, or traditional rod all uses the lures weight to cast it.
If you are throwing plastics, you might as well use any other rod over the fly rod. A high gear ratio reel can strip line just like a fly rod. Give it a spin or two and stop. And when you are using lures that have weight, they'll do it better too.
Again, use whatever you want and whatever catches you fish. But flyrodders don't use soft plastics because other rods do it better. Fly rods are for casting lures too light to cast with the others. To each their own.

Wouldn't you say catching bass are more fun on a fly rod and IF plastics are the best way to catch fish I'd say why not do both. Do you think there might be some advantages to stripping in a lure rather than reeling it, presentation wise?

Soft plastics are usually heavy... that about sums it up.
If there is a way to make one light enough that it compares to a similarly sized synthetic fiber fly, I'd bite. A soft plastic worm the size of a game changer would weigh a ton.
Squirmy worms are soft plastic and people use them (and are judged by them Joking) all the time. They make sense to be used on a fly rod because they aren't heavy. A big bass crazy worm is GARGANTUAN by comparison.
