New to fly fishing, looking to get my own rod. is there a particular rod that most folks start off with? I live in boston and have access to the swift river in western mass, as well as the cape for saltwater. not sure if theres something that would be a flexible enough to handle both if desired. thanks for the input!

I always like to suggest the Echo Base fly rod. Affordable, good reviews, lifetime warranty.

There's a $100 setup on Amazon that I plan on getting to start. I'm in Texas so I don't know where or what I can catch. I've seen big mouth bass on a fly rod so I guess that's where I'll start.

Reddington Crosswater rod/reel combo. Bought it for my wife but used it for months while living abroad after breaking my 'high end' rod. I really thought it was a great rod.

Echo makes some pretty excellent rods in the cheaper range.

I own a couple and still use them all the time.

Check out the orvis encounter if you’re willing to spend about $200 total on the outfit and some flies.

Skip the $100 rod. I think its Maxcatch from China. Go with the echo base kit (rod, reel, line, leader, backing, case, extra spool and thst guarantee mentioned above. I have 2 (a 3 weight not from the kit and the 5 weight from the kit) and have had pieces replaced. The 5 weight lives in my trunk and gets used often.

If you go with Orvis, DO NOT buy the Encounter!!!!!!!!! Myself and 6 other people I know had the same problem with the Orvis Encounter rod. Wade out to start fishing and within 30 minutes 2 to 3 inches of the tip is broken off. Contact Orvis and they want an extra $60.00 plus shipping and handling to replace the rod, which by the way they do not make and they have no warranty on it.
