The Submarine Races

During my years at UNT, I learned this coeducational college had an area known for couples to park and spend some romantic time “necking”, as the practice was commonly called. The area was the parking lot for the football stadium and was quite large and wasn’t used most of the time. I suppose the administration had rather the students park there rather than away from the campus in what might be unsafe areas.

As far as I knew this area was never patrolled by campus or city police, but was always available and with plenty of room. By now you are probably wondering if I participated in any of the submarine races personally. No, by the end of my sophomore year I was married to my sweetheart. In fact, that was the reason we both transferred from our colleges of choice of our freshman year to UNT. I spent most of my time either working or hitting the books. I had barely avoided being called up by the Selective Service due to having a severe car wreck and almost being killed. I was lucky to get out with enough hours and grade points to avoid the draft and needed to catch up.

So, it was clearly a choice of either college or Korea. I still planned to graduate and be commissioned in the USAF and go through pilot training there.

I don’t think there was any place with a higher ratio of girls to boys as there in Denton. On the UNT campus it was like perhaps 5 girls to 3 boys, and in addition there was another all girls college across town, so the actual average must have been 7 or 8 girls to 3 boys.

At a reunion in 1982, 25 years after the class of 1957 graduated, I learned that a fellow classmate and USAF officer had been on the rifle team during college. Their range was in the basement of the football stadium. He told the story they would remove the rifle scopes of their weapons, climb up to the stadium’s press box and from there have a view of all the activities going on at the submarine races below.

He never disclosed what they saw, but he was the most decorated Air Force officer of our class, having flown in the Viet Nam war. Since the 1950s was the era when birth control pills gained widespread acceptance, I will allow you to draw your own conclusions as to its effects. Just Sayin…RJS
