You are exactly correct on the white kings being a rare and much sought after king salmon. They are not the mushy, dying, spawning salmon some people think they are and I’m with you on fishing the spawning runs. People who understand the runs will catch and keep the fish that are not struggling to make it back to their originating nest to lay eggs and die. The majority of people chasing the salmon runs of spawning fish couldn’t tell you the difference between a female loaded with eggs and struggling to get home vs a male that is following along to fertilize that nest and return to the ocean. I don’t target the runs any more because I have the opportunity to go to Alaska every fall for fresh wild, non-running kings salmon as well and all the other fresh fish out in the ocean up there. We watch the runs going on but have never fished any of them up there. I’ve seen the Kenai River so full of king salmon you can barely see the water. Anyone who has seen it will confirm. Every rod down there is bent over with a monster king salmon on it. It’s legal but I avoid all of that combat fishing. I’ve done it and it’s not for me.

Yeah it’s a night mare ain’t it? Fighting for a spot to cast and invariably someone will mess up the drift that don’t know how to fit in and the fight is on. No thanks. Only to catch 5 out of 6 fish you can’t keep anyway. 👎

Yes the white salmon are real-
I caught a large one in a tributary of the Columbia River.
I was to young to realize it’s existence and thought it was somehow bad and buried a 30 lb fish.
Still hate youth for the ignorance we endured-
Not again!

The first one I caught was in Alaska and I thought there was something wrong with it. My buddies told me those are the primo fish of the king family. I caught several up there and also a few on the Columbia and Snake rivers. They are NOT “mush fish” for sure.
