Hi. My boys are 6,7, and 13. I used to fish when I was a kid with my grandfather. That was 30 years ago !!! Everything is new again. I bought poles and a mini tackle box. I wanna show them there's more to do in the summer besides video games. Their dad while a great guy has no interest in the outdoors. I love nature and getting my hands dirty lol. We are from Erie MI and I want my boys to just have fun. I don't have anyone to ask for pointers or tips anymore and so this is all a guessing game for me.

In NJ we have NJ Fish and Wildlife that has programs for people exactly like you and your kids. Do the research for your state and hopefully they will offer some beginner fisher programs. Good luck.

Hi Lisa, and welcome to the Stage. We have lots of experts who have loads of knowledge and are willing to share. Looks like Erie is close enough to the lake to offer lots of opportunities for the boys. You may want to check with the DNR for shore fishing opportunities near you and ask a local bait shop for what they are biting on. Tons of perch, smallmouth bass and walleyes (among others) are in reach. Best of luck to you, and thanks for introducing those boys to fishing!

Lisatipler, the good news is that the boys don't need a fishing license yet. You're already saving money! When it comes to fishing with kids you can never go wrong with a simple bobber, splitshot sinker, hook and worm or minnow. That basic set-up will catch just about anything that swims. It's simple, inexpensive and you can dig worms or nightcrawlers for free.

Lisa, as Dave stated, start them on panfish, a small pond or shallow back water or pier somewhere, so they can have a lot of action. Kids don’t care what they catch, as long as there are lots of bites. Get them hooked and the passion will bloom from there!

Welcome Lisa to FS. The time you spend with those boys fishing is priceless. The memories you make with boys can't be matched with video games or hours on Facebook. Ask questions, post pics. FS users have some great fishing tips. I admire your energy and time with your boys.

Hey Lisa, welcome. So glad you are takin an interest in getting your boys out. It's a shame your husband isn't also interested in it. Hopefully he'll be able to teach the boys other things.
If you go to the top of the page and enter Michigan in the user list, the top 30 people from there on the stage come up. Find some that live close to you and PM them. I'm SURE they would be more than happy to help you out and maybe even be able to get together with you and the boys for some first hand, hands on help with getting y'all started. Good luck and post pics. Saw1.

YOU ARE DOING THE RIGHT THING! I personally think that nothing better to teach a kid to do than to fish. I am sure there are some from your area that can give you local pointers. To get them HOOKED on fishing, take them somewhere that they are sure to have success then they will be more patientest (SP) when fish aren't biting as much. Look up fishing clubs and sport shops and ask questions. It is really neat when they have their very own fishing rod. See if there is a Pogey club in your area.
