I'm watching the pre show for the Indycar race and a question came to mind. I thought who better to answer it then you guys. I don't know all the rules and etiquette about the American flag but I thought one was it should not touch the ground. So a guy with a parachute trailing an American flag lands in the infield. Happens in many sports and venues and first to land on the ground is the flag. Why is that ok?

In my view it is not OK. But, who am I?

I think that is contrary to flag etiquette. So is flying the flag at night without illumination. None of the flag fliers in my neighborhood do that. What do I know?

The couple times I've seen it on TV, there was a weight on a rope below the flag. As soon as the weight hit the ground, the ground crew ran out and attempted to gather up the flag as the jumper was feathering his sail to land. I think it was the Golden Knights, the Army parachute team.

Those are the two basic rules I thought I understood.

To the best of my memory and the rules printed in the Officer's handbook, it is never to touch the ground, nor be flown at night without illumination.

Once I was driving near lake Texhoma and passed trough a little village on the way to Sherman. There, on the flag pole in front of the U.S. Post Office was an American Flag flying upside down. I stopped and went in and asked where is the problem? The postmaster was somewhat embarrassed and confessed one of his employees had raised the flag that morning and had not noticed that he had made an error.

As a member of the Rotary Club of Houston, I got in the habit of always checking our flags.

It seems that Old Glory was always correct, but for some reason they would get confused about the Texas Flag with one star. It is always to be flown with the white portion up, and the red down. That is unless we are at war in which red is on top! I suppose that some of the wait staff were either confused, or were Mexican and did it for spite. Just Sayin...RJS

I don’t use a light mainly because I have street light next to my house and illuminates my flag. I do see that often of people not illuminating the flag in darkness. I mentioned it to my former (ex lol) wife and she went out and got solar light for her flag. I complimented her on it. Some people don’t know and if I know the person I’ll mention it to them. 🇺🇸😎🇺🇸

It's a good idea to get up early enough to have your coffee before you go out to run up the flag.
....Don't ask me how I know. I was embarrassed, but it never happened again - until the most recent inauguration day. UPSIDE DOWN AND AT HALF-STAFF!

My opinion is the same as Spirit. It should not touch the ground in a situation like that. Have you heard Merle Haggard’s “Me And Crippled Soldiers”? I went to one of his concerts in Montana many years ago when he first sang it. Funny how that stuff is all ringing true today. It was a very informal concert at a big ranch my uncle worked for and we got to go meet him and see the concert. Merle was an amazing man. He sat at our table ( the main ranch table) and visited after the concert was over. One of those “I’ll never forget this” events.👍

Old glory means nothing to the current administration and I can sort of understand your reasoning there. You just pointed out our country had been flipped upside down and old glory still stood proud and was going to prevail. “Go ahead and turn me upside down and I’ll show you I can take it”💪🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Another thing I feel is not ok is how many American children don’t even know the American flag exists.

This wasn't a political question about presidential administrations and the state of our country. Just about flag rules.

The flag is supposed to be eliminated And the flag is to never touch the ground. Also the flag is to be destroyed by burning it with the up most honor and respect 🇱🇷🇱🇷🇱🇷
