This happened in the 1800’s and was common knowledge in Texas lore. The Hornsby’s and Willbarger’s were neighbors and part of Stephen F. Austin’s colonies in Texas. These two families were on land the furthest west of all colonies. Ruben Hornsby was a surveyor and had surveyed and laid out what would become the city of Austin, Texas.
Willbarger and some others had ridden out to try and find some of their horses that had been stolen by Comanches. They were unsuccessful but were ambushed and most of the party were killed. All were scalped and stripped. Wilbarger had been shot through the throat and when the Comanches came to scalp and strip him, they apparently thought he was already dead.
Now Sarah Hornsby, Ruben’s wife had a dream that Willbarger was badly injured, and they should go immediately to rescue him. At first, Ruben did not believe her and resisted getting up and riding out to find him. She continues to persist and finally Ruben Hornsby does get a group of men to help find and rescue Willbarger who by then was near death, both from his wounds and exposure.
The most amazing thing was while Willbarger was left seriously wounded and naked, he had a dream that his sister came and told him to hold on, help was coming. Now after being rescued, he learned that his sister had died two weeks before he was attacked by the Comanches. So, how would you explain that phenomenon? Just Sayin…RJS

RJ, I picked out a book during our 12 day camping in Big Bend NP. Comanches, written By T. R. Fehrenbach. I remember that story from the book. The Comanches were feared not only by the white settlers but also by all other tribes of Indians. I think they were truly the most savage of the American Indians along with being the greatest horsemen and greatest horse thieves. Thanks for refreshing the story to me😎👍
