New to saltwater fishing on charter boats in NJ. Hubby and I are hooked to this sport, but not attaching clams to the hooks. Seems like clams and squid is all the boats offer. Is their a trick to it or should we look at bringing different bait?
Try sand worms or blood work they work AWSOME!
The tongue of the clam is tough. Run your hook through it as many times as possible. In addition, multi hook the rest of the clam - it should stay on long enough to reach the bottom. After hooking the clam you can also wrap it with thread or dental floss.

Welcome to the Forum, I have only fished off of a party boat one time on the Eastern Coast, NC., and that was many years ago. We used squid. I have fished off many party boats off the Gulf. I love to fish off good ones. It's like anything else, there are good ones and bad ones. The Capt. is the key, he has to know where the fish are and how to position the boat so that the customers catch fish and keep the lines untangled. Anyway, you asked about bait. I always go to the local tackle/bait shop, tell them what you plan to do, go out on a party boat, and then ask them what they would recommend. Usually live shrimp, or Boston Mackerel work well. I have never used clams and squid is a little better than nothing. I also use my own rod and reel and try to get there early enough so that I can get one of the rear corners or at least a spot in the rear of the boat. I assume that you are talking about the party/head boats that go out 20 - 30 miles into the ocean and not the bay boats, they are a waste of time and money.
Good Luck!
try buying some finger gauze ( tubular ) put the whatever in the tubes fold it over to lap ends , run the hook thru the folded ends ( thru the bait ) coupla of times . should stay on the hook
