Met up with JB at a Cabelas here in Whitefish. After a short drive, we arrived at his secret lake. Absolutely beautiful lake, hope the pics do it justice. I picked up a couple of dink smallies and JB gat a few, not worthy of pictures. Then it began, the “peckers” showed up and were with us most of the day. Small fish that would just peck the bait, but not take it. We guessed we had 200+ of those little peckers throughout the day. JB was working his tail off to the put us on the fish. We chatted most of the morning and found out we a had whole lot in common. Spear fishing and free diving, flying to a lot of the same airports around SoCal, surfing in our younger days with both picking the same favorite spot. One of us would tell a story, and the other would say been there done that. Both living in the same area for many years and fishing out of Dana Pt harbor. The big difference was JB’s career in law enforcement, all I can say is “Wow”
Back to fishing. Around noon to 1pm, JB starts landing some decent smallies. Little peckers are still here. I finally get involved, and lose a nice fish because drag was too tight. Will get into that a little later. I hooked probably the biggest fish of the day a good LMB and it heads for the dock we were fishing. My drag is now too loose and it goes under the dock. We finally get it tightened and I manage to get it out from under and land it.
What I learned about Montana fishing is all about having the right drag setting. The big fish I lost with Tim was probably because the drag was too loose. In SoCal, I fish with a much tighter drag than my new Montana friends and it is an adjustment. Very fine line to get the proper setting and keep it there. Next time back I will do better.
All in all, just a great day with JB on a gorgeous lake in awesome country and an terrific guy to fish with.

Congrats on a wonderful day of fishin. So glad y'all caught some nice ones.
Lookin forward to our time together on the water.
My pleasure having you on the water Garey. And as fishing goes, the slowest day I’ve had all year on the better fish. As much as one try’s, sometimes the puzzle on the water just can’t come together as planned. Fish were all there, just didn’t want to play. I always play back any conditions that might have changed. Two noticeable conditions since fishing those lakes from last week. 1) water temps rose 4-5 degrees. 2) fish actually felt cold to touch last week, but yesterday felt like they had been relaxing in a sauna ! One thing for sure… the Garmin forward live scope didn’t lie. Watched fish swimming around all day. Save travels Garey and enjoy Montana. It’s truly a treasured state.
That’s some good looking water and I’m glad you guys found some to play. It’s not always about catching but sometimes just the people and the stories. Glad you had a good time and thanks for sharing with us

Gorgeous lake and background, nice to see you boys catching and just in general enjoying yourselves. I also tend to set my drag a bit light. Use thumb pressure on the baitcasters or tend the spool on spinning reels. So far it’s worked pretty well.

It is great having Modern Electronics but the changes you described will definitely effect their appetite. Has that waterbody turned over? Oxygen will be depleted as temperature rises. I have found that if the bite has slowed due to increasing water temperature the fish may school up closer to any moving water where the water has surface agitation or a creek/river mouth is entering the larger waterbody. Fish seek the higher Oxygen level as well as food source.

It’s possible the water rolled. But there were plenty of active swimming fish on the live forward sonar. No moving water in those lakes so that wasn’t it. Smaller fish were on the terror… just never figured out the puzzle that day to get bites. That’s the main obsession of bass fishing for me… trying to crack the code on the water
