Distance spin casting rod set-up.
The early walleye run is winding down here in the blue water area and I have taken a new approach to fishing walleye here. I am casting out as far as I can get my lure using 1 to 2 oz. of lead, and drifting baits in the current.
I am using a Fenwick Eagle EA106MH-MS-2 10'6" Medium Heavy- Moderate rod rated for 3/8 to 1 1/4 oz. I have 20# Berkeley X5 braid main line on the reel
20 # braid is the way to go here as the max weight is 2 oz (10# per oz of casting weight).
I can get my lure out about 200 feet depending on the wind. Does anybody out there have an idea of a rod set-up to get me out further? 100 feet further would be great, more could be useful as well!!!
Dad-gum! What you have sounds like a great set-up to me!
I have searched all local venues for a rod that will function better and haven't found one. I am still sure that there is a rod that will launch lead and give me a faster action than this one. I really don't want to buy a rod online and find it unsuitable, then let it sit and collect dust...
Try a longer rod and little more weight.
I think I'm looking for a faster action than moderate, and all of the longer rods have slower actions due to their lengths. If I increase weight line size will go up too. 2 ounces of weight is about the max weight I want to throw in this current. I would be happy to give up some length to get more distance. The 10'6" rod I am using now has a short (Michigan) handle, that I also find fatiguing. A full long distance casting handle is a must for a new rod...
