I might take a ride to the Illinois river by Starved Rock to catch one of those nasty fish. What's the best bait for them and are they bottom feeders

Tom - I don't know about the Illinois River, but the pattern here in Northern VA these days is shallow (5' or less) and along the banks or wherever there's vegetation in a shallow flat (provides cover since they're ambush predators). And they're hitting topwater with a vengeance--hollow bodied frogs and whopper ploppers are my most productive go-tos right now. Contrasted to bass, the snakie bite increases when water temp increases. So if you're experiencing the dog days like we are, you're in luck. During the cooler months in spring and fall is when they tend to go to the bottom where throwing bull minnows will be productive. Tight lines brother!
No snakeheads in wis so far. Have lots of northern pike though which qualify as great fighters and great eating

I've never caught a northern pike but if they're anything like muskies, bro that is one vicious bite!

Very comparable. Iโve caught both and Iโd say, pound for pound, itโs a toss up between the two.
