Okay, so new boat, you just sort of expect it will be better than the old boat in terms of handling, right?

The old Crestliner 17 foot had a nice little ride for the size of the boat, it does some things really well. For instance, everyone knows you do not get caught sideways to serious wake waves, you cross into them. So as I was learning this boat, I tried baby wake and it rode through them way easier than crashing through sideways with the hard slams that make you want to slow down. The Crestliner, I kid you not, liked rolling through wake sideways slightly across.

If we were on big water and a boat crossed in front of us a ways out, instead of crossing directly into the waves, I headed toward the direction the boat was going, and crossed at a slight angle which the boat rolled easily side to side to where I didn't even need to throttle back.

First time out in the new boat, we got wake coming at us, perhaps I misjudged the wake these new wake boats generate (like the Queen Mary)...my friend says hew, you better head into those, I said no, it's really smooth to go sideways slightly into them...

Holy F-ing crap, this bigger boat did not like that one bit, the side of the boat was within one inch of being submerged, I am talking buried and sunk. My friend said no, the front was buried.

He said, and his words were what the F are you doing? He says don't do that again...I'm laughing, and saying are you kidding, I crapped my pants, we damn near sunk the boat, he says we didn't do anything, you did. We're laughing and he says don't do that again, which had me laughing and saying he didn't need to worry about that, I was going to be like an old lady on wake waves.

Wether I get passed, or the other boat is going in the opposite direction, I turn into them at a 45° angle. Didn't matter whether I was in my 12, 14, 18, or 28 footer. Never ever take a wave on the beam.

Well, you guys were lucky and got a lesson learned quickly. Here on the Gulf Coast we have large tankers and others which are stacked high with containers. Sometimes their bow waves are so long, and the ship is far away you may not even see them coming.

We come up on a left bend, Debbie &I. Front of the Island Marina. We're in the tin skiff. Small water, two cruisers, 24'+ racing around the bend right at us. I hugged the bank, turned to cross that wake @90* . Aholes laughed. Sundays should not be that thrilling.

Pontoon boats the waves can roll through them . The trick is for you to not get washed out with them. I don't run one but I know people who have them and I've run one in occasion. These days I prefer a 18'6" Dixon extreme duck boat by airboats unlimited and a 35 HP go-devil motor with a Minnkota trolling motor. I fish and hunt out of it .it's had a coast guard auxiliary inspection, I've had a six pack coast guard Captains license. I wish everyone would obtain a boaters course. And get a Coast guard auxiliary inspection. I've seen too many people in trouble on the lake. Too many deaths due to boating accidents and drownings. I've seen three people who died with life jackets on. One hooking up a boat the car slipped backwards and pinned him under the bumper where he drowned. One who was unconscious and we found her s life jacket jipped up on the shore line has a arms relaxed and he slipped out of it. Another a foot below the water with a self inflating life jacket. It was below 40° and he didn't know to blow air into the tube to get more boyuant. Read the directions below 40° co 2 doesn't expand to the same volume

Don't feel bad l had it happen to me and Ranger632 and my other fishing buddy this year by two wake boat's going opposite directions and we in the middle and I have a18ft Bass Tracker bass boat I was lucky to catch it in time and get the boat in position and hit the wakes on time Ranger and my buddy and my self checked are paints !! Scared the living hell out of me !!
In my younger days I would have taken off after them. !!
Sorry you had the same experience that we did.
Enjoy your new boat and I hate those wake boat's .
Have a great week

The shape of the hull makes a big difference. As an extreme example, my Dad had a catamaran back in the 1960's. It was laterally super stable and took wakes well at a shallow angle. Crossing at 90 degrees though, it slammed hard on each wave. A deep vee hull would behave pretty much the opposite.

On the Petaluma we have tugboats pushing sand barges. The Petaluma River is not really super big, they come up on high tides and when they do, we pay attention!

Won't be here in the morning, I am doing fine thanks. Too hot to fish unless you get there at 4 or 5 and off the water at 10

I fish from a kayak and go out from the harbor a couple miles. I am VERY careful about wakes. I think every boater should be. Ans those jetskiers that head into wakes at 40 + mph are nuts. I look out for them, too.
