Gregg got another pretty nice bass on a swim bait this morning with me still stubbornly on my quest for that 2 # crappie. Guess I’ll have to abandon that for a while and fish larger baits, then catch bass and that monster crappie that I do desire. Yeah I know what you’re thinking, pretty weird obsession.

I never had a decent scale with me when I caught large crappies…my PB was 16” back about 43 years ago, but no idea on the weight. My Mom caught one that was 17” which had what looked like a Rhinoceros horn from the same lake (should have mounted that one). They were delicious! Nothing like eating a plate full of crappie filets fresh out of the oil…

I caught mine on a 5" Dinger, so it might be the way to go Brad. Good luck my friend.
Oh and congrats to Greg too.

Yeah OJ, they’re my favorites. I’ve never weighed them either but I’m guessing an 18” in good health would be around 2# plus. I’ve gotten them shy of 163/4” but can’t get to that 17” your mom took.

Yeah Fred, those big girls may not want to expend the energy on the 2” swim baits I normally fish.

You never know what they’ll hit. I caught my PB crappie on a Mepps spinner at the Strip Pits many years ago. It was over 20” long and fought just like a bass, which is what I was actually fishing for. I was shocked when I pulled it out of the water and all I could say was “IT’S A CRAPPIE!!” It was the biggest crappie I had ever seen.
Always wished I had weighed it….

Wow Randy, a 20 “ crappie is a total slob, I’m drooling right now.

I was doing the same thing with a worm, and had the same reaction when I saw what it was. 20in. had to be a 3 pounder. My 2-4 was a hair shy of 18in. Congrats buddy.

I’ve never caught any even close to that size since then, but I’ve noticed the bigger ones (12”-14”+) seem to fight much longer than most others. Maybe that’s typical…?

I've caught a few 1-1.5 pounds, also when Bass fishing, and they fought pretty well. Smaller ones make a couple runs and they're done.
