Does anyone have recommendations for a rod reel spinning combo around the 25-40$ threshold?

I’d look at a ugly stik gx2 combo. The rod is great but the reel is a $10 reel. Should hold you over for a while and you will still have a solid rod you can upgrade the reel down the road.

American Hero from Lew’s? That’d be a great first set up.

If you can bump up to $70

I like the Ugly Stick GX2 Rod with a KastKing Centron Reel. You’d have to pick your size to your liking.

I go for catfish and this setup has held up very nicely,

Honestly, for my first rod, i bought this red and gray Shakespeare rod from Walmart and ending up catching the most fish than any rod I bought after it. It was about $40 and I think a bass rod but I used it for salt water and bass. Caught 2 bonnet head sharks, a puffer fish, sting ray, loads of lady fish, sheepshead (didn’t measure it but it was from my knee to my ankle so it was a decent size)

QUESTION: What are you fishing for?

Freshwater, saltwater? Trout, bass, crappie?

Depending on your answers, the beginning set up is going to be very different.

I would say go with a Medium weight rod, with a medium action.

With Bass you could go MediumHeavy for the rod, and fast for the action.

But with trout in the picture, you are going to fish smaller baits, and likely want smaller line. If you want to go smaller, try a MediumLight rod.

You probably want 8 or 10 lb test line. It’ll work for both kinds of fish,

If you have a Dicks, the Daiwa Samurai is a great combo for 30 bucks. They are usually on sale in the summer, buy one get one free. So you can get a 6ft, 1500 reel version and a 7 ft 3000 reel version.

What ever you buy I would consider better line. I've seen some of those starter outfits in the store and they have pretty lousy line.
