So I went fishing today and caught my first catfished, but unfortunately one was hooked through the mouth and in the eye. I felt terrible and released it after removing the hook. In that situation should I just keep the fish or release it back. Is there a chance it didnt go blind too?
Aside from that the catfish I caught were extremely small (babies) I was wondering how I could catch bigger catfish. I used a small hook with chicken on it and a sinker with a float. Any suggestions?

Fish with one eye certainly can and so survive. catfish in particular are mostly scent feeders and dont rely much on eyesight for finding food.

Use a circle hook. Most often it'll hook them in the corner of the mouth.

So with small bait and small hooks you can catch small all the way to monster sized fish. If you use bigger bait and a bigger hook you can only catch bigger fish

But wont the big fish not bother with smaller bait?

That is correct, I use 7/0 and higher circles and large baits, even for 3pound channels.... the dink’s will peck the bait, but most can’t take it. I say most because I’ve got one pounders in large hooks
It’s why I remove the tail treble hook on a lure particularly when I plan C&R. In areas where C&R is mandated I replace the belly hook with a single hook
