Has anybody have experience with this Tauten Line Welder gadget? I've read mixed reviews and wondered what you guys that may have used it think. Works for both terminal tackle and line-to-line. My eyesight and finger dexterity just isn't what it used to be so I'm exploring options. Used to be able to tie clinch, uni, palomar, trilene, etc. in seconds but now can sometimes take up to 5 min., esp anything under 15# test and/or in low light. Cost ranges from $60 used to $150 new.

As far as I know heat and line are still mortal enemies.

I have the same problem, eyes and fingers just don't work as well as they used to. I've never used this one, but the other ones I have used have pretty much been a waste of time and money. Good luck with it if you try it.

Never seen one DC. I'm sceptical about the heat issue, but if you try it,let us know how it works out.

Maybe try crimp sleeves in the smallest sizes. Crimp pliers. Maybe trout aren't as fussy as we think they are.

I am with you on the eye sight thing. I also have a missing and frozen finger and artificial joint in a finger. Given that, a 2.25 pair of reading glasses on a corky and using extra long tags on my knots helps a lot. I have gone to uni knot, or improved clinch knot whenever possible. I get my reading glasses cheap in an 8 pack from Amazon. I now usually have a pair of reading glassses hanging from my neck and sun glasses on or vis versa when tying. I have also gone to 30# High vis braid main line and 12# floro leader for most fresh water fishing with no apparent cut back on my catch (Dry fly fishing excepted). Keep in mind, if you end up spending a frustrated hour a day tying knots, you are not fishing that hour.

Bapabear - now THAT'S what you call making lemonade out of lemons! And yes on your last sentence--frustrating for sure.

Don't be afraid to switch out. Limes are more bitter than lemons, but with a bit of toquilla, they make for an awful fine day. Life is short. Enjoy it.

Buy the magnifying glasses for tying on flies that fits the brim of your hat and just flip it down when you need a fine knot.

FF -great idea! I just remembered I have an old jeweler's loupe eyeglass clip-on buried somewhere in the shop from my model building days; have to find it and give it a try.

I have used this device. Good for making loops that are good for some applications. I have used it to attach to lures loop to eye. You can run the line through a hook or sinker eye and fuse back to itself. Will fuse two line ends together such as for a tapered fly line leader. May not work for very light lines. It takes some practice and does not replace knots for all situations. It is not quicker than tying knots, but in the loop to lure application it allows quick lure changes.

Thanks Steve. Glad to know you have real world experience with this. How long have you been using it and are you still satisfied with the results? I'm a baitcaster guy and have only tried fly fishing when working with my son on that merit badge in BSA a few years back. These days the lightest line I throw is 6# on a BFS setup. I typically throw 20-30# braid with a 15-20# fluoro leader. I was thinking that the fluoro to fluoro bond might be inherently weaker than a proper terminal knot. Have you experienced any failures with a fused tippet?
