driving through Colorado looking for fishing spots
Colorado Fishing
Hi
I making a trip next month from Mesa Verde up through Colorado to Fort Collins looking for fly fishing suggestions and route to take in my trip any info would be most helpful
also some good places to stay or stop
thanks
Check out the Dream Stream on the South Platte. Enter at the Spinney Mountain Reservoir by vehicle or walk in at the Charlie Meyers State Wildlife Area. When you're done there head to Deckers. If you like to work for your fish hike into the Cheeseman Canyon. The canyon is Gold Medal water !
Do t k ow where your route is but if you near, check out Steambo a t Lake. It's another gold medal area and beautiful country

Fished it years ago flyfishing. Pearl lake steamboat also nice Orvis shop there. Then if you get northward toward Encampment Wyoming. The Encampment river has super Browns in it high 20 " class.. The N. Platt is good but this early in the season may still be flowing heavey????. Great country to view and almost any small creek you pass over has good fishing. Lot's of cutthroats . Also in Encampment check out . I believe it's Hog lake??? But it has Spate ,tryout x between Brook and Lake trout great size and they take midges readily. Hope this helps. I may be off on a few minor issues but it's been years since I fished this area. Take you flytying kit and match the hatch. Good fishn'
if you go to Steamboat, toss your line out into the Yampa right in town. I landed multiple fish there years ago. plenty of places nto stay and eat in Steamboat.
Fishlips5280 has great suggestions on the east side of the continental divide. I might add one to the South Platte river, the area called Watertown Canyon which is a few miles before the river hits Chatfield Reservoir.
If you stay on the west side of the divide, from Cortez head north and fish the Delores River. Further north, between Montrose and Gunnison, is the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Then north east to Basalt to fish the Frying Pan river below Reudi Dam. Head over to I-70 east and catch the Blue River downstream from Dillon Reservoir all the way to Green Mountain Reservoir. Lastly, the Colorado River has nice water in the Granby area and above Grand Lake. And then the river starts getting small enough to spit across without much effort. From there, it’s not a bad drive to Fort Collins.
I fly fished these areas during my time in Colorado. Some of it is “catch and release” water. But there are literally hundreds of spots to pull off the road and start fishing for each of these areas.
Safe travels and tight lines.

Good morning, If you drive the I-70 the Eagle River from Wolcott to Vail would be a good start. Several miles of good fishable water. I drove through that area on July 4th and the water level looked good. Vail has a creek running through it that I've heard has been upgraded to Gold Medal status ! The Blue River that flows through Silverthorn can be crowded and tough to fish sometimes. I usually only catch a few through there but they are usually bigguns ! On the Westside of the Divide you'll drive along Clear Creek. A bit fast at times but a few places by Fall River Rd. that have been terraced off give you a chance. The fish tend to be small in Clear Creek and a lot of highway noise. Google directions to the South Platte from Scraggy View up to Deckers and maybe take a journey over there. Good luck and have fun !!!!
if you take the the route through Poncha Springs you can fish the Arkansas River. Just make sure you're not in Private areas, a bunch of greedy owners don't like fisherman ! Take hwy. 285 to Bailey and fish down the North Fork of the Platte and then along the South Fork for miles upriver from the convergence of the two forks. eventually you'll hit Deckers.
thanks i appreciate your info
