Taxpayer ready to go to Prison

My wife, Jean’s father was an IRS employee and worked at one time in San Antonio and later in Houston Texas. In San Antonio, he worked in the section that required he be armed with a weapon. Further, when
the United States President was in town his section was called on a part of the President’s security detail.

He related one incident where in San Antonio, they had audited a Mexican American family and discovered that every member of the family had claimed the same deductions which were legally allowed only for one of them to claim. This wasn’t an unusual case and one that could easily be set straight if they would hire a CPA to go over their tax records and file an amended return. Not a big deal.

However, the family was not clear on this procedure, having been notified that their tax return had to be amended. Now, since most of their language at home was Spanish, they apparently did not understand what the IRS required them to do.

They had a family meeting and concluded that one, or another of them was going to prison, it just depended upon which one! They thought it over and decided that since the grandfather had earned the
least amount and had not contributed much to support the family, he should be the one to go to jail. So the next Monday morning Grandfather arrived at the IRS office with a small suitcase and ready to be put in prison for their misstating their taxes! Just Sayin…RJS

I can understand the confusion. Lawyers write the tax codes and it's hard for a non lawyer to understand their verbage.

For the first time in over 40 years I filed my taxes last year with only a small amount of income. I was absolutely shocked at how much I had to pay with very few deductions. Previously, I had been self-employed and took advantage of a lots of tax deductions.
I think it's time that I began writing either the Great American novel or books on fishing, traveling, and fine restaurants!
