Korean Lawyers in Houston

I suppose it was around 5:00 PM and I was just leaving my office for the day. As I entered the elevator, I was surprised to see the only occupant of the elevator car was a tall, good looking oriental female. I knew there was a large lawyers office a floor or two above us and assumed that she was a Chinese lawyer who worked there.

I immediately said, Nehow! The Chinese term for hello! She replied in an icey tone, “I am not Chinese, I am Korean." I then said what do Koreans say when they want to say hello? She said, “Chow!” She was one impressive lady, approximately six feet tall and well built. So, for the rest of the trip I kept my
mouth shut in fear of offending her again.

I had and still have a much longer friendship with another youmg man, Yong An, and this goes back many years, in fact I am not sure just we originally crossed paths. I suppose it was at church. I do remember as a Second Baptist Church deacon, it was my turn to word the opening prayer for the 10:00 A.M. worship one Sunday. At the time we had slightly more than 700 ordained Deacons, so your turn would only come up about every two years. Yong and his wife were in the audience, and I believe he assumed my being at the podium during the worship service as having much more power or authority than was the case.

We became good friends. He had grown up around Fort Worth and after college got a job in Washington with Jim Wright’s office who was a Democratic Congressman. During the period Yong worked in the Capitol, he also went to law school and earned a law degree. I did not know much about his practice, but on occasion he would use my membership at the Petroleum Club to entertain important clients. He would always immediately send me a check for his bill at the club.

Just recently, I learned that Yong was now the single authorized representative to handle all the petroleum imports for the country of South Korea! I must admit he was a good choice. Here is a native who was born in S. Korea, had adequate Washington experience and connections, was an experienced lawyer and living in the petroleum capital of the world! I would imagine that being the sole
representative of a country and handling all the purchasing, contracting, and delivery of fuels was one that payed a generous fee. I was surprised but agree with their choice! Just Sayin…RJS
