Hello all I’m new to this and thought this would be a good way to seek advice and improve the experience my son and have while fishing in the outer banks North Carolina. I’ve never fished salt water, and I plan on trying to throw a line out from shore while I’m in the outer banks on vacation. I could use advice in everything from rods, line, tackle and fishing techniques if you all are willing to share

Star you may also consider some pier fishing. I haven't been there for years. Last time I was there it had grown a lot. Probably more so now. I'm sure the Oregon Inlet area is still a good spot. Hatteras point was also a popular place. If nobody has up to date info the tackle shops was always a good place to ask. Good luck 👍

Star can you narrow it down a little. Pier, surf, bayside or all 3?

All 3 have options and would help those replying.

For pier fishing you can fish from the old Bonner bridge at Oregon Inllet. For surf, 9 foot spinner or longer. Throwing 3 to 6 ounce weight with bait, shrimp or mullet for redfish, sea mullet, bluefish etc. Best bait shops are Red Drum, Hatteras Jack's , Frank and Frans depending on where you are.

A N.C. big box store probably will have an Ugli Stik combo that will serve you well. Fresh water rinse after fishing is needed every time.
Local tackle shops will help with rigs as can You Tube. Shrimp is premier but not cheap bait. Squid is less costly and effective. Pyramid sinkers will bury in sand and hold while banks sinkers will roll with the tide.
SUNSCREEN, broad brimmed hat and polarized sunglasses are needed.
Tight lines!

20lb braid, two number 1 hooks spaced 18" apart and 4 or 5 oz torbedo weights. at least a 9ft or 10ft rod.
Bait: cut up two pieces of squid 1" long. No fishing if a west wind because it will be too calm and fish don't bite.
Good luck.

Go to anyone of the Outer Banks tackle shops. Most will help you. The first time I went down I went to Reddrum Tackle in Buxton and later to Frank and Frans also in Buxton. I live in Greensboro, NC and it’s still 4-5 hours for me to get there.

from the shore cast out (weight and two or three hooks) and let it sit on the bottom with your index finger under the line to feel the fish nibbling and/or biting the bait. I would check the bait every 3 or 5 minutes.

If I'm fishing pompano or sea mullet I'll usually hold the rod , pretty much still fishing. To check bait always reel in slow unless you're pretty sure that you had a solid hit znd missed it. For drum fishing I'll usually deadstick the bait in a sand spike. Flounder fishing I cast and slow jig back.
