We don’t see these very often.
Got it on a bitsy bug. The bass bite was decent today after the wind laid down some. Started out with white caps kinda ruff in my 16’ fisher. The top water bite was a no go didn’t try. Did some drop shot and some Texas rigging. Best baits was zoom worm pumpkin chartreuse on Texas rig. And a gulp minnow the color was water melon Perl on the drop shot. The picture is of bowfin. AKA dog fish. Or mud fish. I thought it was a giant bass when it hit.

Are they an invasive species? Are they any good to eat?

Mike my 1st wife's family was from outskirts of Pittsburgh. I use to go with her pap to fish a couple ponds. They had bowfins there. Never ate any myself but others at the pond would readily take them. 👍🎣

We know them as choupique, pronounced shoo-pick. They will destroy your tackle as you discovered. Check out the video on cleaning and cooking them.

Bowfins are a native fish. They are a nuisance if you are Bass fishing but fight much harder than a bass. They are said to not taste good. They will also tear up lures and rigs. I release them as they are part of the ecosystem. They seem to be plentiful but do not have any overall effect on the balance of waters where trhey are found.

The WV DNR doesn't consider them invasive. (they're considered natIve here in VA though). They're sure fun to catch--put up a more aggressive fight than LMB from my experience. But I've heard they're poor tablefare so I've never kept one.

East Harbor is where he’s fishing. Best bass spot on Erie.

Neat catch Mike, I’ve never caught one but have heard they hit and fight like freight trains.

What's strange is catching Flying fish in the Arkansas river and flying softshells in Brazos River in Dallas Texas, these turtle's fly out of the water and take flight like a duck 🦆 I kid y'all not!
