Just moved to Florida from Virginia.
Looking to get some info on where to fish from piers or surf and whether there are any worthwhile canals to consider fishing in the area. Not looking for your secret spots just a general idea of where to fish.
Thanx in advance

Try Woods and Water magazine. Try local TV and Radio fishing reports. Try local tackle shops

Got a girl friend who lives in Bradenton. She doesn't fish, but if you see her tell I said "HI"? Her name is Gloria.

Hey FF! So, a chapter in my book of life took me to exactly where you are. As a Missouri-born and raised guy, saltwater fishing was something I'd never done. Thankfully, I got to know a gentleman who took me out to learn. There I was with all my bass gear, sitting in a white boat going 70mph in water where I watched the bottom go by. That was crazy for this hillbilly! Sitting in the middle of intercoastal water where the shore was wayyyyyyyyy over there and I could jump out of the boat and stand up. THAT was a rush. My lesson came as we headed toward the mangroves. Beautiful stinky tree islands that offered cover that made me feel like I had viable targets to throw at. And snook quickly became my favorite fish to catch. This was nearly 20 years ago, but I remember them being sleek, tough and hard fighters. And it made my heart stop when they'd explode on my wooden topwater bass lures. I don't recommend that. Fish out there are unforgivingly strong and can beat up a wooden lure quickly. I was shown to throw spoons and inline spinner lures, especially if schooling fish were out. Best of luck to you!

Welcome, fished that area for last 10 years from surf, wade and pier. The rod n reel pier on north end of AMI is good at times. Wade in the intercoastal waterway throughout. The RED TIDE has really put a hurting on all aquatic life in the area, good luck.

Ugh, I forgot about the dreaded red tide. I thought it was nasty when our Missouri lakes turn over. That tide is something else!

Hi,
I don’t live there but visit several times a year in the area. One of my favorite places to see wildlife and fish is the Skyway Fishing Bridge State Park. It was an old bridge that was broken in half so the state made it into a place to fish. It’s a great place to learn about Florida Fishing as you can watch others and pick up tips and ideas from them. Lots of friendly folk there too. You do have to pay by the amount of people in your car but don’t need a fishing license. It’s included. And if the fish don’t bite lots of dolphins and pelicans to watch. Even a manatee swims by once in a while. I’ve only met one skunk on the bridge while fishing. 😎
