Fishing the south branch of the raritan river yesterday and caught a decent size SM ( a big one for this river). He pulled really hard & I thought harder than a trout. Later hooked 2 bows both of which ran all over the place & didn’t make it to the net. Strong current for all 3 fish. Any opinions on which is really the better fighter?

Wild trout fight better than stocked ones but pound for pound my bet goes to smallies…

In my area the stronger fish on a line is the rainbow for sure but we’re talking 2 pound bass vs 5 pound rainbows in most water bodies. If I were to compare a 2 pound has to a two pound rainbow I’d probably say the bass would be a better fighter here.

Trout are trying to get away, whereas, a smallie is trying to break your rod and pull you in. They jump just to “size you up” and plan their attack! 😂

This is the best description of what I’ve experience I’ve ever seen. Thank you. It matches exactly with my experiences which I never could have put into words like you did.

They fight different. Fighting back has to be different as well. It seems more large trout escape than large bass. I guess that is winning the fight. I expect it is due to their softer mouths. I have never gotten a long salmon like run from a bass, but have from a trout. I have never gotten so many repeated short runs from a trout that I have from a bass. All in all, it is an unfair comparison.

I do agree and enjoy the fight from both as I do with any kind of fish they all have unique fighting abilities that's what makes fishing great 🇺🇸🎣😂👍

For sure. I think S Bass have a larger tail vs length, and more body, per length, than trout hence more power.
