Caught a nice 20" keeper fluke this past Wednesday. Minimum size is 18 1/2". Upon returning to the dock I filleted it at the new station they set up and got 4 nice fillets. I took no more than ten steps from the table to toss the carcass in the water. As I turned back I saw a gull just finishing off the 4th fillet. I wasn't gone from that table for more than 10 seconds, and that SOB had my dinner for his lunch. Everyone at the dock had a pretty good laugh, my fishing buddy the loudest of course (he got skunked for keeper size). I learned a valuable lesson and will never again leave my catch alone. I was a bit pissed off initially, but couldn't stop laughing on the drive home.

A lesson learn the hard way unfortunately ππ½ππ½π£π£π£πππ π πππΊπΈπΊπΈπ¦

I know very much some are going to have a few unpleasant things to say about this but it happened over 40 years ago and I have changed a whole lot since then ππ
There is a public pier here in the area where I live and one day I was there fishing π£ with some friends and as I was baiting my line I turned around to get a towel to whipped my hands π and a Seagull swoop down and stole all my bait the next day I and friend went out to this point that extends about a half mile out like a bluff along the ocean and we took turns with my 30-30 popping seagulls off the hill for target π― practice for stealing my bait
Back then it seemed like π the right thing to do
Would not do it now π‘ππ
Now you would use a .22? That's what I would do.

Glad you got to go out. Hope youβre feeling better too. I know what you mean. The egret in the photo shows up at every fish cleaning like the pelicans and gullβs . Heβs brave enough to walk up to the gut bucket and help himself. Iβm sure that seagull appreciated your filleting his dinner. π

Between stealing your fish and getting tangled in your line they are quite the nuisance. I guess that it is all part of the nbig show.

My nuisance with them is they like to chase after the top water lures. Dang gone it!!!!!
We're not the only fishers out there. And maybe we're not the smartest?

I would say that we are the least of the fishermen. We are however, persistent.

I learned that lesson the hard way too, a seagull tried stealing my small box of frozen squid. When I saw the attempt I stuck a knife through the squid and into the dock. I turned around a moment later to see that darned bird pull the knife and the squid out of the dock and fly off to drop the whole thing in the bay . I lost my bait and a good kitchen knife! Boy was I mad, but not as mad as my mother!!
That was 50 or more years ago!
The only fluke I lost kinda like that was when my dog grabbed the flopping fluke, ran off the dock and buried it down at the beach. I looked for it but couldnβt see where he had buried it !!π€ͺπ€£
Happened to me. My wife and I were dining on the deck at a harbor side restaurant in Portsmouth NH. The waiter was setting her plate on the table and a flying rat swooped down and took my steak off the tray while it was still balanced on the waiterβs shoulder!
