DNR crews are in the process of tagging up to 500 northern snakehead fish with blue and yellow tags.
The goal is to learn more about the size of the snakehead population and where they migrate.
They’re asking anglers who reel these tagged fish in to take a picture and report the catch back to DNR.
“It has a telephone number on it as well as a tag number on it,” said Eric Wilson, with DNR’s Fishing and Boating Services. “They are very, very visible. As soon as you catch the fish you'll be able to see it.”
Those who report and harvest a tagged fish will be eligible for a $10 or $200 gift card.
In Tennessee, if you catch a snakehead, you are to kill it then report it to the DNR. Under no circumstances are you to return it to the water!

Not yet Griz, last time i was at Curtis Bay another fisher told me he catches them there. I will be on the hunt for them next time there.
I’ve heard they are fun to catch and excellent eating.

I'm checking around looking for places to fish them. They are a worthy quarry even if they are invasive.
Plum you need to come on to the Potomac it’s full of them.
We here in Virginia are supposed to kill them also…. Caught on the other day with a huge sack of eggs… they multiply quick and are nasty predators

Seems like a waste of DNR dollars that could be used for better Resorces.

According to current VA DWR, "Anglers are required to report snakeheads kept but are not required to kill them if caught and immediately released. Snakeheads must be dead if in possession (contained in live well, cooler, etc.) However, the Department asks that all snakeheads be killed if possible."
So here you can C&R; they're quite literally in just about every fishery in northern Virginia. Caught this female in a local (private) impoundment. Immediately snipped the gills and made beer-battered fish nuggets that evening. IMO they're the tastiest freshwater fish I've ever had!
They are real good eating!

Seeing how the Potomac empties into the bay, you just might get a few snakeheads from the Chesapeake your way. Got to find a decent launch site for my kayak on the Potomac. If you know of a good location Db, please let me know.

Could possibly be a write off for the vendor supplying the gift cards.
Those rules seem strange but whatever. Glad they are good eating. Seems like if they want them dead then would say do not release any. It sounds like they don't want them to survive and end up in some other water they are not in yet.
