Welcome mom, I’m not familiar with your region but a universal catfish bait is chicken livers. There’s also commercially produced catfish baits without the mess that should be available at your local tackle shop.

Aww thanks 😊 and is there a way of preparing it or just the chicken liver by itself?

Jfm,not mom, this damn spellcheck. If you soak them in a salt water solution they’ll be a bit more rigid and stay on the hook a bit longer.

Use the most smelliest bait as in mackerel or chicken livers dipped in a bait dip on a sliding egg weight I used a 1/0 hook or sometimes bigger I have caught 3-5 lbs cats in several of the county parks.

Chunks of shrimp will work also, and stays on the hook.

just fishin is right on point with his method. I've fished "cats" in San Diego County for years and have always (well, most of the time) using just those. On occasion shrimp soaked in fish oil will trigger a bite if the "mac" or liver isn't doing it.

My favorite bait for the kiddie cats is fresh crawfish. Break off the tail crack open the shell and peel the meat out. Thread on one or two pieces of meat on a circle hook. The meat stays on the hook pretty darn good. Dip the meat in your favorite stink bait and your gtg. If you have kids catching live crawfish is another highlight.
