I will tell you, it's no fun at all! When I was waiting on my mother, who was inside my grandparents house, I was standing leaning against the car door in Texas, a pop-up thunderstorm brewed up quickly. I was maybe eight to ten feet from an Mamosa tree, the sky was going wild with electricity then, Pow! Lightning hit the tree, every hair on my body stood straight towards heaven like a scalded wildcat! I was hearing angles singing and I'm just 16 years old here, oh Lord I'm about to die?! I jumped through our cars open window, like the flash I kid y'all not..another bolt hit the now split tree a second time setting it on fire! Now I'm worried about catching on fire. I quickly started the car and moved it away from the tree and ran into the house and we visited until the storm eased off.

Yes. Close enough to smell the ozone. It’s a chemical reaction when the lightning burns the surrounding air. We were in a boat in the marsh with nowhere to hide. Lay the rods down and get in the bottom of the boat. It’ll have you praying.

Never that close…..Did feel a sting holding my fishing rod and lightning hit across the lake somewhere, little bit traveled up it…

Yes! In my parents tiny cabin maybe 30' by 60'. My parents bed was on the floor in the corner and my bed was over there's attached to the wall. Lightning hit the corner of the cabin above my head and traveled down past my dad and hit the concrete slab. It blew pieces of concrete around the cabin but no feeling to any of us. We were lucky.

Was in the garage with my grandfather ducking the storm lightning hit an apple tree right next to the garage. Now Pop was stone deaf for as long as I knew him, but he jumped sky high when it hit..

That big ol' black cloud follows me around a lot, but I have never been that close to lightning, I don't want to be either.

As far as the worst lightning strike death was my grandfather's baby brother, Ted Goforth an oil drilling rig electrician while in a cherry picker, he had all the safety gear on working near the Waggoner ranch in Texas. A lightning bolt struck the ground, traveling up the platform and totally vaporized him. The only thing left of him was his wedding (ring)? Probably did him in.

Yes, have had 3 experiences. First was in Phillie as a little kid, was looking out the window and saw a guy walking with and umbrella get struck. Mom took me away so don't know what else happened to him.
Second, we were at summer Camp Nathan Hale in Ct in the meeting house at top of hill watching storm. Flagpole outside @10ft got direct hit, Man what a racket! Earth split on two sides and shot up in the air. Left cracks on both sides of the dirt.
Third, and hopefully last. I was on a friend's sailboat coming into Sheepshead Bay. We got stuck out too long because his mother wanted to fish longer!!! I saw the huge black clouds coming in but not my boat. Pelting rain, thunder and lightning right over our mast. Don't think I've been more scared. Thank goodness, didn't get hit.

Rare warm Christmas week back mid 60's. While sitting in the living room lightning hit the chimney antenna. All the Christmas lights wrapped around the fireplace came on and then went off.
Heard a second crash in the basement and some items sitting on the I beam came flying off.

During the hurricane two yrs ago, a bolt hit one of the line of pine trees alongside the drive out. Took out the tree, and it fell across the road, could not leave till cut up, and moved. The sound was very very loud.

Christmas season, 1966. Our family was in a mobile home and lightning hit a power pole that was about 20 feet from the trailer. The wall plates blew off of most of the outlets and flew across the floor, our circuit breaker box was fried and the power pole went down.
When lightning hits that close, you don't hear thunder. just BAM! like an explosion.

Even crazier that i remember something like that from 60+ years ago.
I think we kind of remember the close calls, even though there was nothing we could have done to prevent it.
