I may be bragging a bit, but I spent a lot of time teaching kids to fish. One of the things I learned is that we often underestimate their potential or ability. Here is a photo of my son at age six wielding a full size musky rod and bait casting reel. This photo was taken 33 years ago. He is now teaching his kids. He persisted, but it was still a couple of years before he caught his first muskie.
As special services director for my fishing club, I helped them take hundreds of young people fishing and many of them caught the first or biggest fish of their lives on these outings. We always took one of the parents with us when we did this.
Teaching a kid to fish can benefit them is many ways (they can't be on the phone while hefting an outfit like the one above).
Ben recently did something very commendable in this regard. I hope everyone can look for similar opportunities!

Good for you, and better for him. That is our future. Teach them well.

I have dozens of photos of him growing up. I couldn't pick a favorite. We went out almost every weekend in the summer until he left for college. A great way to bring up a kid!

Just a bit. Tell him I said Hi, next time you talk to him.
Musky, that is so great and the picture is priceless. What you're doing for those other kids is just fantastic.

I don't do it anymore, I am getting old and am no longer in the club. These days, I focus on getting my grandkids out into the wilderness away from the urban environment and electronics. They are able to put the electronics down to enjoy the outdoors!

If you can take a young person fishing, by all means, do it, especially if you live in a region of the country where outdoor opportunities are still abundant. Have patience, you will spend more time baiting hooks, untangling lines, and hopefully landing fish for the kids than fishing yourself. You will find it rewarding and the young ones will remember the experience forever.
