The impending death of a great lady warrior.
The (former) USS Kitty Hawk will arrive off Brownsville, Texas approximately 10:30 May 31st for her last short run up the Brownsville Ship Channel to the wrecking yards where she will be turned to scrap. For sailors everywhere, the death of a great ship is a sad event, especially for such a gallant and decorated warrior. Kitty Hawk was built at the Navy Yard in Camden, N.J. while I was assigned there as part of the pre-commissioning crew for the USS Little Rock, so we share some history. If I am able, my boat and I will provide side-boy support as Kitty Hawk travels those last few miles to her destiny. If recent history is a bench-mark, sailors of all types have honored such ships passing's with crowds of respectful American's. Join us if you can. Not all days are just for fishing.
Wow how neat and probably sad seeing this memory of your life come to a close as i get older seems like you watch your past and go dang that went fast. Give her a good send off for me too Kitty Hawk has memories for me in a different way its those Wright Bros.
Maybe her heart will give life to another great ship.

May we never forget the sacrifices that was given by brave men who fought upon tremendous war ship's and war plane's in hostile seas to defend our freedoms. God bless America!
Kitty Hawk and her sailors did much for our country. Scrap yard sounds harsh, may she rest in peace.

If I lived anywhere near I'd be there! Nephew was on USS America in the Gulf and his son just finished serving on the nuclear sub USS Providence. Sail with pride!!!

Had several friends who served on board the Kitty Hawk. I lost touch with them but Iβm sure they will be sad to hear this. They were real proud to have served.
For those who might not have known, the Kitty Hawk and one other moth-balled carrier were sold to a salvage company for one US dollar, $1.00. I think the other carrier, also moth-balled in Bremerton, Washington is the America, but I'm not sure of that. The salvage company undertook the multi-ocean tow of over 17,000 miles and they have been at sea for over 5 months. Since I moved to Brownsville, Kitty Hawk is the 4th CVA class ship to make that last trip up the ship channel.

Remember her well. She was just getting to Nam when we were leaving in 1965. Farwell.
Perhaps that vessel should have gone the same route of the Oriskany. I hear it has become a great artificial reef.
The Rio Grande Valley artificial reef, at this point, has no complete hull structures that I know of, but pieces of many ships have ended up out there - along with tons and tons of concrete, ballast, etc. The fishing out there is fantastic, I hear. Red Snapper as big as your boat.....lol
