Hi all! So I have finally decided to take the plunge and buying a boat. But not just any boat, I am purchasing a 12 foot V boat that I want to turn into a small bass boat. I need you guys to help me. I want advise on everything trying motors, electronics, material for casting deck and frame. The whe 9 3/4 yards. I would even like help with names and cor ideas. The only thing I won't do is put a live well in it because I don't keep the fish I catch. So hit me up with anything you have as an idea.

The first (and probably most expensive) thing I would suggest Aaron, is a remote controlled bow mount trolling motor, preferably with Spot Lock. Aluminum boats are light and the wind will drive you crazy. Usually it requires that you build a small, flush deck to mount it on. I wish I didn't go cheap when I bought my Powerdrive, as I got one without Spot Lock.
When you build your casting deck, don't go too high as it raises the center of gravity and makes the boat more tippy. V hulls tip much easier than flat bottom John boats when you are standing higher up. Here's a picture of my 14footer, to give you some ideas. Feel free to ask any questions you want. Good luck Captain.

Fred’s right. They are spendy but worth every penny. Spot lock type is really great auto deploy is really slick. But are not a must but once you have them you don’t need to anchor etc. Slowly but surely you can set up your boat to have all the goodies. It’s really neat to move 5 ft in any direction or 30ft etc

Def use rod holders. Buy em or make em. I had mine on the inside walls both sides. I but them in only AFTER loosing 3 by stepping on them off balance. That sucked.
If you're gonna custom it out, a plexiglass pivoting wind shield is something I wanted to try. During the motoring it's in front of you. But when you stop, it lifts up and pivots behind the motor. And it can be removed for those days the wind isn't so biting. Good luck and post pic of the progress!

I have so many suggestions I can’t even right them all down.

Trolling motor with remote and spot lock is awesome got one for my 14’ and it’s worth every penny.

Construct your deck out of 1/2 pvc board. Super light and impervious to water. I will happily walk you through using it. It’s well worth it. And easy to work with.

On board charger is a must.

I’m just going to send you a text. Then we can talk. I’m a carpenter and really enjoy these projects. I just built mine last year and I made improvements this year.

Electronics depend on how deep your pockets are! I like Garmin but good arguments can be made for Humminbird and Lowrance. Go on line and go to a box store with displays and talk to sales peeps and play with em. Electronics, trolling motors etc. can be linked but usually within the brand/family. So compare the options with your goals before you hock the family jewels. Good Luck!

Keep in mind the weight limit's specified on the boat it is easy to exceed that with plywood and other equipment including the motor people etc.

Mercury is made by Tohatsu, Suzuki, Honda, and Yama's are your best bet. Take a look at all of them, and the price. Fred is right about not putting a lot of weight inside the boat. Battery, outboad, gas tank, troll motor, ice chest, seats, anchors, rod/reel and tackle box all contribute the weight. Add them all up, then find out maybe getting in the boat might be overloaded. LOL But you can find all the weights and add them up, and be aware of putting the trolling motor in the back, along side of the outboard, you will more than likely place the battery back there, and when you sit on the seat it will be a lot of weight in the back, try to distribute the weight front and back. Welcome to the Stage, show us the end result.

I have done boat restorations on antique boats of early 60's, trihulls, Jon boats and 80's -90's and a 2021 Jon boat using expansion foam to aid floatation under my floor board's and sides, had it all decked out w electronics, outboard, low profile swivel seating, setting outside under the carport, on the way to popular fishing spots and every fisherman stopped by and bid me to death wanting to buy it! Sold it for 3 time's the price of what was put into it. Looking at online boat projects idea's and you can pick up idea's you'd like, until you have a plan to make it fishable, unsinkable, functional loaded with the goodies that fits your needs. Good luck, a friend to lend a hand feeding wires or holding for gluing ect.

I would go at least a 14ft or 16ft ! 12 ft is small if you want to build a stable platform. I wouldn't go any smaller than 14ft.
My buddy has a 14.6 that we fish out of and his seats are raised 6".
And we fish comfortable that's why I say 14ft or Bigger and he put a plat form in the bottom of his boat so we can stand up and cast and it still will rock.
Just think about it and be safe I have a 18ft Bass boat and I remember when I bought my 1st Aluminum boat it was 12ft and wished I would have saved upmore money 💰 and got a 14ft hull ! But I was young and couldn't wait!!
Good luck

There were and are a load of good ideas so far but I got to go with Andy's input. If you can afford it go with the bigger boat. Your probably want to take a buddy fishing with you and that 12' gets mighty crowded after he brings his ice chest and gear on board. The stability goes right out the door. If you do buy the 12' boat get yourself a good life perserver and wear it.

I will very soon, post a picture of my 14' yacht. I have a 4 stroke 40hp Tohatsu with two batterers in the back, and a 6gal fuel tank. I do have a steering console, with switches and a tach. On top is my 7' depth finder. I have a small deck in both front and back. I did all the wiring, and changed out the helm, I had to put a 'no feed' helm in the place of the other, due to higher torque on this motor. I put a 6' gar fish in the boat and on my way home, no more room. I also put a snapping turtle on the bottom and flipped it over. They are fast, and just jumped right back over and started toward me. I really had to shove a boat hook in his mouth to keep him at bay. Between a 65qt ice chest and two decks, one console, and my tackle box, I run out of room quick. I have had 10-12-14-16-and 17' boats. I like my little flat bottom boat, it is a custom built, easy to launch, and take out.
