New to fishing and a new boat owner and fishing in south Louisiana and look for any suggestion to help catch crappies.
Well, it takes a few years but you can master it. Crappie are schooling fish and they follow schools of minnows, and other small fish. It is like a rolling cafeteria, where ever their food goes, they go!
You need to look for deeper water, say deeper than 10-12 feet, and with some structure to provide a minimum of protection for the minnows or other small fish that the Crappie feed upon.
In U Tube you can even view instructions on who to create a 'honey hole' for crappie using an evergreen tree. You will need to tie a heavy weight or rock to the bottom of the tree.
In North Texas folks would also sink a bale of vetch hay, and might even add some cattle feed, made of cotton seed cake. This begins to slowly dissolve and the bait fish will be drawn to the buffet!. It takes a fisherman longer and more work, but then he has a secret honey hole for years!
Also, very small, bright colored jigs, plastic worms work when no minnows are available. Good luck and post your pictures. Just Sayin....RJS

Good morning to ya! Welcome to the joint, known as the fishing stage. What city are you living or wanting to fish. I can help maybe start with the city, boat, do you have a fish finder, etc.

Crappie season in South Louisiana is usually February to March. I use chartreuse baby shad with pepper or chartreuse 2 tone rooster tails on a light spinning combo. I would wait until the cooler weather sets in. You can concentrate now on bass at nightfall to be productive.

Nice Slab Racewalker. It's gonna feel like South Louisiana here today, 98°and humid. Luckily it's only a 2day thing. Thanks for the tips and the great picture. Tight Lines.

I live in Baton Rouge. Have a bay boat with 200 Yamaha 2017 less than 30 hrs.
I am less than 20 minutes away. I volunteered to work a Church fishing rodeo Saturday morning in Denham Springs for LDWF, mostly for kids. I caught 4 bass yesterday on the baby shad & wacky rig Senko. That was all on shore without a boat motor.
