Our new dog Huey takes to people so effortlessly , we think he would be a great service/ companion dog for childrens hospitals and hospice or retirement folks
Been doing some research and actually know a couple who is doing this with their Bernese
Local place.
We think we are gonna do this.
Give wife something to do while I’m out of town working.

Hey Ben,

I'm glad to see Huey is adjusting so nicely given his background, ie...rescue dog.

Here in Texas your dog has to pass a good citizenship test to qualify as a "Therapy Dog" which is what I believe you are describing.

At one point you had mentioned Huey would growl at your wife if you got close to his face. Does he still do this?
Also, when you feed him a food he REALLY loves, is he protective or threatening when you try to remove it?

It's a great idea, just be sure to check into it and make sure Huey can handle it.

I love hearing about Huey. Maybe some day I should post about Kodi, aka Blackdog

Good Luck,

BD

Hey Ben, br br I'm glad to see Huey is adjusting ... (show quote)

Yea. That’s his kryptonite. Do not get in his face. He’s never snipped but gives fair warning. You are in my face , get out of my face.
Once you back off. Immediate good ole boy again. Never seen this before.
NOT possessive of food as you describe. That’s a plus. I know what you mean.
I’ve tested this by giving a treat and taking it back yo see reaction.
I firmly believe Huey is ready for folk in need of a pick me up . Else I wouldn’t consider going thru the process of getting him a cert.
New job I’m in Indiana M-F.
Give the wife something to do evenings.
If this dog Gould give just one person in need the joy he gives us every day. Just one. He has done his job.
I told you about the woman who had just finished chemo with Non Hodgkins . Hell she was on her hands and knees on the lawn playing slap your butt with him and laughing hysterically with joy.
I was so proud I can’t put it into words.
Woman went thru hell and walked out the other side and got a rush from this amazing animal.
He’s guarding the front door right now waiting on daddy to go to bed.

If he ain’t straight A I will be surprised.
He has functioned well to every encounter he’s had.
People jokingly say they are gonna kidnap him.
A truly majestic animal.
Hell with dog is man’s best friend. I’m his best friend!!!

We can’t even spell around him.
Wife spells TREAT and he’s off yo the races. Come on ! Let’s do this !!
Or POTTY right to the back door he goes.
Tested this just to make sure I’m seeing what I think I’m seeing.
Say green beans , he sits in front of the fridge. This is the extra special treat !
Goes potty in rain. Sits in front of the Towel we keep on a hook by the back door waiting to get dried off and won’t let me stop till he’s dry enough.
And OMG. Riding in daddy’s truck is highlight of his world.
I take him to the store to pick up a pack of smokes.
He’s cruising in a bad a.. F150 4WD crew cab. And he knows that’s cool
Can’t wait to take him on new boat!! He will be a king!!!

Yes, you can do it. My understanding is the pet needs to have all their shots and a letter from Vet. Check with the place where you want to go. I was planning on doing that with my new Labradoodle, but she is such a licker that figured it would not work.

It takes a very special kind of person to bond with a dog to train it and let it go.

Something to remember, most of those who he would visit will be most probably be getting in his face because they are kids or elderly sitting in something low like a wheel chair. I am sure he could be trained to accept that.

Beautiful dog. Our son had a golden lab named Huey. It was a working dog and trained to sniff out explosives. He brought it home every day and when the dog got older it was retired but our son got to keep the dog. The grandkids could roll all over the dog and the dog would just lay there and let them do it. Very gentle. Over time, our son had three labs for work and was able to keep all of them at home. Huey was the most gentle. Sadly he had to go to doggy heaven last December.
