Sand buggies

Sometime back we all talked about our first car then all the different cars we owned. And going thru some pictures I found the last sand buggy I built in 1978 for playing at the Imperial sand dunes at Glamis Ca. We had motorcycles 3 wheelers and sand buggies. These are some pictures of the mid engine 171 cubic inch corvair powered with a VW transaxle. It had duel 3 barrel 46 ida Webber carbs using aviation 110 octane full lead gas and nitrous oxide injected, I also used a air conditioning pulley to shutoff the fan and Alternator to keep from throwing the fan belt and getting more HP. The buggy weighed 800 lbs. ran it one time at the sand drags and best time was 4.8 seconds at 80 mph in 100 yards using only 2nd gear. Sold it in 89, the dessert was getting too crowded and too many drunk drivers. Here are a few pictures of it.

Had a vw buggy a long time ago. Broke a clutch cable. Had to be towed back to camp by a set of tires that looked like yours. That's all I remember, those darn tires and the amount of sand they threw in my face. Good times till it got so crowded.

Very cool F&R. I used to watch the Sand Drags out there on TV when I was a kid.

YEEHAW FANDR...

I grew up out in that desert. I went to Glamis one year on Thanksgiving when the Glamis Store set a record of 1 Million Dollars on that Thanksgiving Weekend. I took my 1981 XR500R there with the fresh fat tire. Had ball and cooked a bunch. Went to Competition Hill and Oldsmobile hill. We really loved the Magnesium fires with blown VW cases. Angels Stadium ALL NIGHT.

I drove my 1967 Ford E-100 With an extended tail end and the Camper van Expand a van on the top. It had a cot that was removable up in to top area with widows on the driver and passenger side of the van. My brother over heated that van that my father bought from a fellow FED at the Yermo Annex Marine Corps Logistics Base in Yermo.

The guy he got it from got it from his mother who bought the van brand new with 200CID and the expanda van top from factory ( special order top ) The person my dad got it from hauled 3 Motorcyles in it. Tied down. IT had a small bench seat behind the drivers seat after he removed the cooking gear his parents had in it from the factory special order.

I received the van because my brother and dad never liked wrenching at that time. They usually went and bought different rig.

I rebuilt the 200 Bored the Cylinders 40 thousands of an inch over and installed Sealed power pistons. put it all back together after building the head. Installed a custom 4 core radiator on the original harrison radiator tanks. Set it up with duel Alternator/Water pump pulleys so had duel V Belts. it started within about 3 revolutions of the flywheel.

I used that van for a lot of recreation. It pulled my 1962 Clipper Craft Wooden Boat all over and never had any problems with it. No oil use no leaks and never needed anything but fuel and preventative maintenance. I love building engines. ITs really fun.
