Welcome, Roger. I've been to the woolen mill and Paul Bunyan statue there several times. We usually vacation around the Hackensack/ Park Rapids area each year.

Welcome to the stage Roger!

I will be in Bemidji for a 5 day weekend on Memorial weekend for a wedding (in-laws). We are bringing my boat, so I hope to fish a little bit while up there!

You are in a beautiful part of the state and near the headwaters of the Mississippi River! And yes, you are in for some great fishing!

Welcome to the Land of Sky Blue Waters!

Roger: Welcome! Looks like you are already getting quite a welcome, and perhaps some advice about fishing. You have come to the right place since there are more than 60,000 members. That means a lot of experience, wisdom, and yes, even a ration of B.S. Just Sayin...RJS

I was just wondering if you or Roger have ever heard of the Snackin’ Shack in Hackensack?
About 55 years ago, my dad and I went with a guy who grew up there, about my dad’s age, and his son who was just a year older than me and spent a week “roughin’ it” in the woods by a nice lake near there. They, and their family, were lifelong friends of ours who we grew up with and fished and camped together all the time.
The week we spent there was one of the greatest memories of my childhood, in spite of the lack of “facilities” and the sparrow-sized mosquitoes! There was a small bakery at the Snackin’ Shack and the owner knew our friend from growing up there, so each day we would clean our catch, take them to the bakery, and the owner would stuff the fillets in milk cartons and put them in a freezer for us. At the end of the camping trip, we stopped by and picked up our fish and took our catch back home, to Kansas.
I can still remember the statue of Paul Bunyan. If I remember right, his blue ox was also there…
It’s been a long time, but thanks so much for reviving this awesome memory. I often think about that place and wonder if the Snackin’ Shack in Hackensack is still standing……

If I remember correctly, the shop is still there, but has been vacant for a couple of years. Yes, Babe is there with Paul. In Hackensack is a statue of Paul's sweetheart, Lucinda Kensack.

Do you remember what lake you were on?

I have no idea what the name of the lake is. All I remember is we got to it driving down a grown-over dirt path from the highway and if one didn’t know the path was there, you would never see it from the highway because the tree limbs and weeds had grown across the entrance to the path. We didn’t see a single soul on the lake the whole time we were there. It was VERY secluded. Pretty cool place.
Another thing I remember was the only lure we used were red/white striped Daredevils.
Also there was a bait and tackle shop there that had a huge (~5’ )
Muskie hanging on the wall. I’ll never forget that! We didn’t catch any muskies, but we caught lots of Northerns and a few walleye. Lots o’ fun!!

All very interesting, but unfortunately I’m way too new to the area to be familiar with all the towns around here, I’m just now learning my way around Bemidji! Haha Sounds like an awesome trip as a kid…well sounds pretty cool for an adult too!!

Also, thank you all for the warm welcomes!

I’m excited to get on the water. I bought a Perception, Outlaw 11.5’ fishing kayak, getting it all outfitted for some fishing as soon as we can get this darn ice off the lakes!

Good luck when you do get out. You'll find that often these threads take some interesting turns from time to time, like Randy and I did. Nothing disrespectful, just a bunch of ole fishermen having their own conversation.

Hackensack is about 45 miles south of you on Hwy 371.

Yeah; I posted that before I read your post about being new to the area….
It was an amazing trip and memorable time! Only wish I were able to do it again (without the mosquitoes!) LOL
