Well, Bear and I caught fish this morning. A species that may be unique to the south - Skipjack. Caught 3 like this one. Had a couple bigger ones get off. I guess people use their meat for catfishing.
I had never heard of these before today. Here's a pic.
Way to go g,I knew you'd find em!! Congrats brother ππ

That's Great Greg. I've never heard of freshwater Skipjack. Apparently they're a Shad, from the Herring family.
I've only heard of Skipjack Tuna, which are in the Bonita family. Very cool and I'm very happy your streak is OVER!

A catch is a catch gh, hope you drown that skunk while you were there.
Glad that you had some catching going on today! Perhaps with the right seasonings they could be table fare? If not at least you are ready to go for catfish!
One of my sisters sent me a new spice to try last week, named "Shifty's" (shiftysseasonings.com), and since it's made in Millington, Michigan I had to give it some serious thought! It comes in RED or WHITE versions, with the white being a standard concoction and the red being on the spicy side.
So far I have only tried them on some grilled burgers...and it was uniquely tasty. We grill a lot of cisco and whitefish around here, so I am always looking for ways to enhance their flavors with sprinkle on stuff. Those skipjacks may be in the same fish family...not exactly sure though...
Anyways, I'm sure they were fun to catch even if they may not be as edible as other species!
Those definitely count! Congrats on starting a streak of catching!
Glad you finally got that critter off your back G. They might only be bait, but the fun is in catching regardless of what it is. Now keep that skunk away. Just do send it here. lol

Congratulations. Have caught them in the Atchafalaya spillway before. They range from Ohio south through the Mississippi basin and even as far south into brackish water. Did yours jump when reeling them in? In your neck of the woods theyβre also called Tennessee tarpon. They remind me of the ladyfish we catch along the coast, fighting and jumping. Fun but pretty much inedible. Unless youβre really hungry. π

Yes they jump. They try and shake the hook like bass. Fun to catch. A good size one runs like bass when they have the minnow.

Well DD, any signs of a grin is purely accidental. Now, get off my lawn! I feel better now.
