I am just wondering if anyone knows if the hook really does rust out of a fish if they swallow it deep and you just cut it off and leave it? I have tried and it seems that the fish eventually die and float to the surface. Mainly trout is what i fish for but not limited to just them. Thanks
Trout are very sensitive. I have experienced them going belly up after a swallowed hook. So I just keep and eat those fish and release fish that will survive. No sin in that. Answer to your question yes a hook will eventually rust away I have seen them in stomachs of fish and they where doing fine. But they were I fish like pike and bass. Some fish seem to take a little more abuse than others.
I fish for Largemouths and have heard that an embedded hook will impede feeding/swallowing; I always try to get it out one way or the other. My problem is that the process of hook removal, if not done quickly, stresses the bass. Watching the pros on TV and funny how you never see them struggling to get a hook out.
carbon hooks will rust out
When fishing catch elease use barbless hooks Fish with flies stay away from any kinds of bait. where it's legal you can fish a fly behind a weithed float. Go barbless.
Catch and release ??? Naaah, Hook and Cook !
Catch and release ONLY

I have 2"x8" bumper stickers w/ the above sentiments available @ kevheidrick505@gmail.com. Not really in the biz of selling, just spreading the message.
They will rust and pass through the system. Actually caught a fish that was passing a hook.
