West Michigan Walleye

My wife and I decided we want to target Walleye a few years ago. So far I've caught one large mouth bass. It became clear we were doing something wrong so this year we decided to go where the Walleye are at, buy the right bait and tackle and choose the right time to fish. Well, i never heard of such nonsense but i guess it's worth a try.
We are old people and limited to where we can go so if anyone has some advice in the Newaygo Michigan or West Michigan area we would greatly appreciate it. It's not like we've never fished before but just never caught much. Thanks.

Welcome to the Stage 2piles. I'm not a Walleye guy, but we have a bunch here. They'll be along with some help for you. Until then, Good luck and Tight Lines. And Happy Easter!

Thanks a ton for the reply and welcome. Happy Easter back to ya and here's hoping we have a great fishing experience this year.
It's been a long time since we've been out with a pole so I hope I still remember which end is which.

Welcome 2piles, There are supposed to be lots of walleyes in the Muskegon River, especially near the Hardy and Croton Dam ponds. Check your regulations as to what is open and try fathead minnows suspended below slip bobbers. If the season is open, watch the other fishermen, too! Some may even offer advice to other spots or techniques.
Good luck and Happy Easter!

Thanks for the info. We are real familiar with that spot on the Muskegon. We fished there last year but that was before we had any idea how to. I guess you could say we're OK with just standing there with a fishing pole. But now we're getting hungry and it would be nice to catch something. I'm putting together as much info as I can find about Walleye. The baits, the timing, the tackle and all of it. Your specific info is a big help.
Thanks again.

Hello
I'm not to familiar with the west side of Michigan for walleye but if you have time to go to Saginaw Bay and fish with crawler harness and a 2oz Lindy rig in about 20 foot of water you should do fine. I usually fish near the shipping channel and get my limit every time I go. Using planer boards and dragging a crawler 40ft to 50ft behind the planer board 100ft from the boat at 1mph seams to work for me. You will catch sheepshead cat fish and perch, I have no idea what sheepshead are good for so I let them go. Hope this helps, Happy Easter.

I guess I should have mentioned that we dont have a boat anymore. We are locked into shore fishing which I know limits things a lot. I've heard lots of great stories about Saginaw Bay and that entire area. I'm convinced that theres no need to travel clear across the State to find Walleye so right now it looks like the Hardy-Croton dam area along the Muskegon river is going to be our go-to spot as soon as Walleye season opens at the end of April.
I'll remember your recommendation since we have relatives on the East side of Michigan with boats.
Thank you for your reply.

Not totally familiar but might be some good fishing by the submarine in Muskegon. I know you mentioned walleye but if you want to learn pier fishing now is the perfect time. Some good salmon/trout fishing is happening and it's possible you could catch a walleye also.

Oh yes! The submarine. I've seen guys pull some nice Salmon out of there AND it's hard to not like Salmon. Guess I'll be buying more then just Walleye baits. I already have a nice long telescopic net that would work well off the Muskegon river bank there.
Thanks for the reminder and info.
