I think the Okuma rod reel combos are the best bargain out there and ate relatively well made.
eBay is the only way to go for most all tackle and fishing rods.
Just figure out what type rod and reel you want and shop around to see and handle a few. Then go on eBay to compare prices.
I recommend a spinning reel on a 6-7 foot medium action rod for versitility.
Reel should be able to hold 150+ yards of 17lb. mono for bass and catfish. Panfish will still be caught on same rig too, but 8-10lb is better size line for bluegill, small mouth bass , and most smaller fish.

I take it you're fairly new to fishing since you don't know exactly what rod and reel you want/need. First, let me say that opinions vary when it comes to fishing equipment. Some guys, and girls, who fish love and swear by baitcasting reels, others tend to believe spinning reels are the way to go. Personally, I use spincast reels. If you ask why the reason is that they are what I like and am most comfortable with. I used spinning reels for years and I've recently tried a couple of baitcasting reels, but I simply like spincast reels better. Don't fall for, "This is what you should use because it’s what real fishermen use." What you should use is what's right for you. I like the simplicity of spincast reels and contrary to what many believe there are some very good ones out there these days. An earlier post said to go for a Pflueger President Spincast Fishing Reel on an Ugly Stick rod. I have never heard anything but positive feedback about Pflueger President reels and an Ugly Stick rod is a great choice. If I were getting started in fishing, I'd start out on the low end of things. You can buy a Zebco 33 combo at Walmart for less than $40. Trust me, as you keep fishing you'll want to try new and more expensive equipment, but until you know you're going to love it, why break the bank? I hope you love fishing and you share your love of fishing with others. It is such a healthy way to spend your time!
