Fishing newbies/Lake Skinner

Hi there,
My 6 year old mentioned he wanted to go fishing and I thought Lake Skinner would be the best place.
So now I'm looking in the Walmart website for a pole or two we can get in the morning before we head out. Is there a certain type of pole/line we need to get a certain type of fish or any types at Lake Skinner? Do they sell bait there? Is our line likely to break if we get a kid pole? Does he need a kid pole? We've never been fishing. What should we know so we can have a super fun day and maybe catch a fish or two?
Thank you for reading and your help.

Hi Kbear,
I presume you are talking about the Skinner Reservoir near Temecula?
I would recommend going to Walmart and looking for a spin-cast combo to share, or one for each of you. Also look for a panfish kit which should contain the necessities like hooks, bobbers, sinkers and possibly a few lures. Don’t forget to buy your fishing license as your day could be ruined without one. Also pick up some Berkley Powerbait crappie nibbles. Hopefully, someone will already be fishing there who may be able to help you get setup to fish. Good luck!

Your Walmart may sell worms, too! Worth asking, anyway…

Welcome to the stage kbear. Like OJ said a spincast rod and reel combo works really well. A whole lot of kids and adults started fishing using a Zebco 33 combo. The line that comes on the reel should work fine. Rig it with a bobber, a split shot sinker, a size 6 or 8 hook with a small piece of night crawler will catch bluegills all day long as well as other fish. My grandson sent me a picture of a carp he caught on one of those little kid poles when he was 12 and that must’ve been one hell of a fight, carp will test your gear to the max cause they don’t have quit in their DNA. I saw a 6 year old kid hook a 20# flathead on one of those poles and needed his dads help to land it. He came over and borrowed my dip net to get him out of the water.

Thank you both so much for this advice! Another thing I was wondering is if we will need to rent a boat or if just sending on the side will get anything?

Boats can always be rented but can be expensive. They are fun to fish out of but I’ve been bank fishing most of my life and have done just fine.

Welcome to the stage great bunchof people here.
I would suggest a combo set that Zebco has to offer I have always started my Grandchildren off with that set up and up grade from there. They are easy to use and fun.
You can buy bait at Wall Mark I like using baby night crawlers or if you can get jumbo Red 🪱.
I would get #6 or smaller hooks and splitshots and bobber if you don't know how to tie a hook go on line and look it up.
I would tie you hook and put your split shot 18" to 20"up from the hook and you bobber 6"up and this may very but it gives you and idea and you can also look this up.
Been fishing for 60 some years like alot of us here glad to see you want to take your son well come to the fishing world.
Have fun and have a great Easter 🐣
