George N. Mitchell's Famous Quote1

This was after the famous Watergate break-in, and discovery. The perps were all convicted as well as several of President Nixon’s top aids. It also cost President Nixon the presidency.

I had a very hazy, but essentially correct memory of the pithy and ironic quote made by the U.S. Attorney General, and close confidant of President Nixon during his presidency. While Mitchell was known as a strict “Law and Order” lawyer, he apparently didn’t think it applied to him. I have little doubt he knew that what they were doing would mean prison time if the acts were found out.

After the Watergate ‘break-in’ was disclosed, and all the ‘perps’ were tried and convicted. George Mitchell, the top legal advisor of the President was sentenced to 19 months in prison, at his arrival and entry to serve his time, a news reporter asked him a general question. Mitchell replied with a touch of mischievousness and even a little venom. “Well at least Martha won’t be there!” Now, in retrospect, that may not have been clearly understood. Was it that he wanted to be rid of her and glad to be separated from her, or possibly that she wasn’t indited as one of the perpetrators? Her role was never disclosed but likely to have been materially involved.

So, while there seems to be snakes of both parties, acting and doing anything and everything both illegal and unthinkable to win e******ns, it doesn’t seem to have changed.

When all the house of cards came crashing down, and there was nothing left for Nixon to do by resign in disgrace, his then Attorney General was Alexander Haig, who was there to make sure he would not be allowed to commit suicide, by removing all weapons or possible methods.

There were some who more enraged and felt he should have acted in the opposite manner; give the way his administration had brought some much embarrassment and shame because of their criminal acts. This was answered by the e******n of Jimmy Carter, as Democratic party candidate as the next president, defeating the Republican p**********l candidate. Just Sayin...RJS

Needs to happen again. Thanks for the info Robert. Many of us didn’t know or remember much of that scandal. The one going on now is even worse.

So sad that things like this continue to happen in America. All because we have let the ruling forces do this to us. It sure needs to be stopped and now.

This administration really brought things to light for most of us. It’s insane what we let our government do now and I agree. We need to put a stop to it.

Mr. Samples, It's too bad things didn't work out so well for President Carter. Terrible times, but that's the breaks. Thank goodness the GOP has recovered from the hijinks of those sneaky, lying weasels of the Nixon administration. Truly the scummiest American politicians in my lifetime. In fishing terms , lower than whale $#!T .

Thanks for the CORRECT name, nutz. For a minute, I thought my memory was slipping, especially when 'Martha' was brought up.

Being a college kid at the time, Watergate was "our first time" to observe what the political scene actually was(is !), and how it effects our lives so vividly..... welcome to adulthood, boys and girls !, here's how some try to run our country ! Woke me up.

BTW.... Pretty sure that GEORGE Mitchell was...... Dennis the Menace's grumpy neighbor !

Well Andy, it was pretty bad, primarily because we had no answers to the OPEC cartel. Jimmy himself is a good man, but was really unprepared for the Presidency. His chats from the White House with his sweaters on were not particularly inspiring.
The bigger problem, in my view, and this started a lively pro/con discussion here before, was when he allowed the t*****rous draft dodgers return from Canada following their abandonment of their military obligations during the Viet Nam war era. This from a former Naval officer. Sure it was an unpopular conflict, and a waste of the lives of our military careerists, and our countless teenagers, and ..... it was none of our business or of a legitimate concern to the USA.
Still that's no excuse for their actions. Everyone else sucked it up, or like Mr. Ali, did their prison time, if it meant that much to them. Not quite like those who slunk back to America , after the danger to them personally, had passed.
I understand that it was a healing gesture, but had it been me, I would not have returned to what I thought was a country with such deep flaws that it caused me to depart in the first place. Just my perspective, and I have been wrong before. But, thats how I feel, and I welcome again any criticism that anyone wishes to take issue with regarding my position. Over and out.

...And on that note, why on Earth did we let Hanoi Jane back into the country after her treasonous visit to North Vietnam?

B..... Allowing that P O S to return was not the problem, but not then stuffing her into prison, that was a huge mistake. She's on the top of my most reviled list, for what she did to those guys.
Talk about UnAmerican ! One of the most t*****rous people in our history. And not a thing done about it.
Disgraceful.
