I’ve got a new boat, 22-foot aluminum, I would like to take it out of Tomales Bay (CA) for rockfish and Dungeness crab. Some place off of Dillions Beach, Point Reyes or Bodega Bay?
Any recommendations or ideas, water depth, location, etc?
For years we have crabbed inside of Tomales Bay with smaller aluminum boats while camping at Lawson’s Landing.
Thanks

Better hurry on the crab, Stab; going to shut down crabbing early because of entangled whales. I believe I heard April 7th, or there abouts. And I think it's for both commercial and sport because they didn't mention either/or. Good luck; Bodega is a good bet!

My brother went out of that harbor and did well on a chartered "combo" trip. Not sure about depth, or locations, but a little chat at the local bait shop might produce some good intel. Good luck.
Anyplace you can find bull kelp and rocks, You can find fish. From Monterey Cal. north through Washington, I have mostly fished small areas that do not produce the volume of fish needed for a charter boat. But provide much better quality fish. Ling cod can be found from 10 feet, to however deep you want to several hundred feet deep. The same is true for flat fish and rock fish. Keep in mind, a thing charter boats can not do for practical reasons, is fish down the kelp at 10 foot internals for suspended fish. Weedless hooks fished in the middle of a kelp bed, can produce some amazing results. Although I have not fished the kelp beds down south of Monterey, kelp beds and rock fishing should be the same. Good luck.

Cheers on the new boat. Try Elephant Rock south of Tomales Point. I'm sure you know it. Be careful out there.
