Does anyone care? I've been a movie lover for a long as I can remember. Not to be snobby about it, but I think I've got a pretty discerning and critical eye, and I'm pretty good at picking the wheat from the chafe so to speak. I don't generally have much arguement with the Academy over their picks, but I believe that over the past 30 years or so we have seen the Academy devolve into and institution of political correctness. Why?

Right now I'd be really surprised if the deaf actor who is nominated for best actor, gets the nod. I know nothing about him, don't even know his name and I haven't seen his movie. Or any of the rest of them for that matter. But I'm predicting that outcome based simply on the fact that he is physically challenged and nominated for acting in a (I guess) major motion picture. We'll see.
I've had a doubting eye on the Oscars ever since that movie about the Brittish runners won best picture back in the 80's. Remember that one? No? Neither does anyone else. How about Raiders of the Lost Ark? Charr**ts of Fire should have had the title Raiders of the Lost Oscar.
Although here are a few clinkers from the 70's as well.

Patton beat out MASH and Airport.

The Sting beat out The Exorcist. One of the alltime classic horror films ever made.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (a damn fine movie, yes) but it beat out Jaws. If Jaws is not one of the best movies ever made . . . . . . . . ?

Rocky. Rocky. Rocky. I get it. A classic. A movie for the ages. A movie for everyone. And it beat out Taxi Driver. In which Robert DiNero is absolutely spellbinding. And he didn't get the best actor award for his performance. Pure politics. Marty Scorsese was on somebody's sh*t list at that time.

Annie Hall. Meh. Beat out Star Wars. All that Star Wars did was - I'm not gonna go on about it. The world of cinema was punched in the mouth and changed for ever by that movie. Why would you give it an award?

Kramer vs Kramer. Beat out Apocalypse Now? Yes. Yes it did. Pure politics again. Francis Ford Coppola was on that list along with Scorsese I guess.

So there were some truly great movies made during the 70's, but they didn't win Oscars.

I invite you to take a look at the Oscar winners of the 21st century. How many have you seen? How many would you even care to see? Maybe it's true that they don't make em like they used to? But if they do, they don't win awards.

Not interested in watching the Oscar’s since the hosts stopped being funny and although I watch the movies I don’t care who wins. I did like to see the tribute reel about who departed that year. I’d rather read about it the next day.

I didn't watch much of it but I did get to see Will Smith punch Chris Rock in the face for insulting his wife. At least he tried to.

Best picture was Coda. What?

I was wrong about best actor. It went to Will Smith.

Never have and never will watch the Oscars.

Why would i want to watch actors pat themselves on their backs for doing their job which is acting, not saving lives?

Than rewarding them with a trophy and gifts.

Nope, lost interest decades ago when the Millionaires (who are paid to pretend to be someone else) stand there and feel the need to tell me how I should live my life. They were awarded for entertainment…not saving a life!

I did hear about the Will Smith slap to the host (Chris Rock). The local radio show here said it was staged, but the host tried a joke in poor taste about Smith’s Wife and Smith walked up and slapped him pretty hard. He certainly deserved it and was then warned by Smith from his seat to keep his Wife’s name out of his f…ing mouth! Probably the most interesting part of the show, but I had to look for it this morning online. I will give Smith an “Atta boy!” For defending his Wife!
