Hello All! Can anyone help with an issue with my 1989 80 hp Mercury outboard motor. I am not getting spark. Is there a way to check the CDI box and stator? Help needed, Greg

Make sure the neutral safety switch is good. If there is no spark when you turn key and engine turns over. You can get a tool or just use a spark plug. Make sure any and all electrical connections are clean and not corroded. Any of the connections can also have a broken wire or bad connection therefore causing no primary voltage to the coils. If you have basic knowledge of automobile electrical circuits outboards are very similar. I compare them to lawnmowers actually.

Thanks for the info, but can you test these connections with a volt and ohmmeter?

Yeah. Should have battery voltage unless you probe something after the resistor wire. Then it will be 8 or 9vdc.

You can research how to check coils for continuity. Usually the problem is primary voltage or possibly the stator.

A few guys on fishingstage have had a problem with the controller box ( whatever Mercury calls it on that model)

If you have a pulsing primary voltage when turning it over and there is no spark I would say it’s the box. If you have no pulse but you have ignition voltage then the stator is bad or a wire is broken / bad connection

Sounds dumb but check your kill switch. We we’re getting ready to pull the boat out of the water in Canada and were calling a shop in town {1 1/2 hrs 1 way). Guy came down the dock said he didn’t want to be a smart ass but had we checked the kill switch..
flipped it off back on and motor started.
Just saying
